Universal Sydney

Universal is one of Oxford Street's most storied LGBTQ+ nightclubs, a multi-level dance venue that, for nearly four decades, was The Midnight Shift, Sydney's legendary gay club that opened as a men's disco in 1980 and became a hub of queer life, drag, and early ACON/HIV-response history. After the Shift closed amid the lockout-law era, Universal Hotels relaunched it in 2018, preserving its heritage while adding multiple dance floors and a state-of-the-art lighting and sound system. Today, it packs in international DJs, drag performances several nights a week, go-go dancers, and themed parties, drawing a primarily gay male crowd of twinks, party boys, bears, and daddies of all ages, and it's currently proposed for heritage listing in recognition of its place in Sydney's queer history. Busy till late on weekends, it's a cornerstone of the Oxford Street strip.
