Qtopia Sydney

-
301 Forbes St Darlinghurst, NSW 2010, Sydney, Australia

Qtopia Sydney is the largest museum and cultural center for queer history and culture in the world, opened in 2024 in the heritage-listed former Darlinghurst Police Station just off Oxford Street's Pink Mile, in the heart of Sydney's historic gaybourhood. The building carries a heavy history: in the 1970s and '80s, it was used to lock up gay men and the peaceful protesters violently arrested in 1978, whose stand led to the first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, and the community has now reclaimed it. Across a campus of four reclaimed buildings, it hosts up to 18 exhibitions spanning HIV/AIDS, human rights, sexuality and identity, media representation and First Nations queer stories, alongside a moving AIDS memorial, repurposed cells documenting police brutality, and two theaters staging live LGBTQIA+ performance. Powerful, educational and defiantly fabulous, it's a genuine must-visit for any queer traveler to Sydney.
