There is something I genuinely admire about the gay bars in Bordeaux: they have survived and maintained their identity in a city that, by Paris or Lyon standards, is not a major gay capital. The people running these bars - and I have met most of them across years of visits - commit to their community in a way that feels personal rather than commercial. Bordeaux currently has five gay bars and clubs formally listed on misterb&b, all located in or around the historic centre, all easily reachable from one another. The night here does not start early - most bars fill up after 9pm or 10pm - but what follows tends to be genuinely fun, local, and welcoming. If you visit during Pride in June, the energy in these venues becomes something else entirely. For a full overview of gay life in the city, check the Bordeaux Gay Guide. "I would first ask them what kind of bar they prefer... 3 bars in Bordeaux, La Cassette for a younger crowd, le Buster for an older crowd, with its little back room, and finally my favorite Philippe, a queer bar with a small terrace, vaulted cellar and entertainment every night..."
The bar I always find myself in whenever I arrive in Bordeaux is Le Trou Duck - a small bar in Saint-Pierre with one of the funniest names in French gay nightlife (ask a French speaker to explain). It is intimate, has a terrace that is perfect for early evening, and when the drag shows kick in later, the place becomes something genuinely memorable. The one I always return to for a bigger night is Coco Loko - open daily 6pm to 2am, with a downstairs room for pop and an upstairs for electronic, and a resident host (Mlle Coco) who regularly brings in drag artists from across France. It pulls a young, mixed crowd and the happy-hour cocktails are among the best value in town. For something heavier and men-only, Le Buster is the bar I recommend without hesitation: run by two British expats, Preston and Graham, with two rooms, an industrial atmosphere, and a regularly welcoming crowd that mixes locals and English- and French-speaking travellers in roughly equal parts.
The bar that functions as a true gay club in Bordeaux is Ultra Klubs - late-night, with an outdoor smoking terrace, guest DJs, live music and shows. Open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from midnight to 7am. If you want to dance in a space that feels fully gay rather than just gay-popular, this is where to go. The crowd skews young, the music is current, and a good Friday night is genuinely electric. For a softer start to the evening, The Lefko' is a music bar welcoming to the gay community, open Tuesday to Saturday from 7pm - ideal for a drink before you head somewhere louder, with a warm, sociable atmosphere that reflects the best of Bordeaux's LGBTQ+ community. The gay bar scene in Bordeaux is intimate, welcoming, and genuinely local - which means it rewards a slower approach than cities with a more tourist-oriented scene. Do not expect packed bars at 8pm. Expect a warm welcome, good conversation, and venues that feel run by and for the community rather than for a transient crowd. The Saint-Pierre district is walkable enough that you can genuinely do a tour of all five venues in a single evening, which I have done more times than I can count. The sweet spot is a Thursday or Friday in summer: Coco Loko for the apéritif, Le Trou Duck for an hour on the terrace, Le Buster for a tighter atmosphere, and Ultra Klubs for the night.
