Gaydelight: Stuttgart’s legendary queer Volksfest celebration
Gaydelight is one of Stuttgart’s biggest and most established LGBTQ+ celebrations, bringing queer visibility, live music and unapologetically festive energy to the Cannstatter Volksfest. This is not a permanent gay bar or nightclub with regular weekly opening hours. Instead, Gaydelight is a recurring community event organized at selected times of the year, most famously inside the Zum Wasenwirt festival tent during Stuttgart’s enormous autumn fair. The date, location and program should therefore always be checked before making plans.
Gaydelight has been part of Stuttgart’s queer calendar for more than two decades. What began as a gay and lesbian gathering at a traditional German festival has developed into a major LGBTQ+ happening that attracts hundreds of guests from Stuttgart, southern Germany and beyond. Its longevity matters: taking over a large beer tent in such a traditional setting gives the community a highly visible place at the heart of one of the region’s best-known celebrations. The result is an unusual and joyful mix of local customs, queer pride and large-scale party atmosphere.
Inside the tent, expect long communal tables, freshly poured beer, hearty Swabian food, live performers, DJs and a colorful stage program. Guests stand on the benches, sing along with the band and turn a classic Volksfest evening into a wonderfully queer spectacle. Lederhosen and dirndls are popular but not compulsory. Some visitors embrace the traditional look from head to toe, while others add rainbow accessories, glitter or their own playful twist. The mood is less like an intimate gay bar and more like a giant community reunion with beer steins, pop songs and several hundred new best friends.
The audience includes gay men, lesbians, bisexual, trans, non-binary and queer guests, along with supportive friends. Gay travelers will find plenty of opportunities to meet local men, but Gaydelight is deliberately broader than a men-only party. It celebrates Stuttgart’s entire LGBTQ+ community. Groups often reserve tables together, although solo visitors can also enjoy the sociable atmosphere. Shared seating and collective singing make conversation considerably easier than in a dark club where the bass has declared war on human communication.
The best-known edition takes place during the Cannstatter Volksfest at the Cannstatter Wasen. For 2026, Gaydelight is scheduled for Thursday, October 8, from 6 pm to 11 pm at the Zum Wasenwirt tent. Reservations are strongly recommended because the event can become fully booked. Depending on the ticket or reservation category, packages may include seats, admission wristbands or food and drink vouchers. Read the conditions carefully before purchasing, and do not assume that arriving without a booking will guarantee entry.
Public transportation is the sensible way to reach the festival grounds, particularly if you plan to enjoy the beer. Security checks and restrictions on large bags may apply. Gaydelight also organizes or participates in other community events, so information attached to a previous edition should never be treated as permanent.
For LGBTQ+ travelers visiting Stuttgart at the right time, Gaydelight offers something far more distinctive than another conventional club night. It is proud, loud, deeply local and delightfully over the top: a Swabian festival tradition reclaimed by the queer community, one raised beer stein at a time.
