Ross and Mark are two hosts from down under who generously give us a glimpse of Sydney's gay life. Between the warm climate and the festive atmosphere, it is easy to see why these two love their city so much. The boys share their secrets for avoiding the beaten path and enjoying the authenic Sydney experience. You can relax on a sun-soaked beach, savor a gastronomic meal at an award-winning restaurant, and take in some shows. Explore Sydney, experience your pride.
How gay-friendly is your city? What’s gay life like there?
Inner city Sydney is a hopping, thriving place for the gay community. When Australia voted for marriage equality in 2017, 84% of people in the area said "Hell Yeah" to equality! The local council and local businesses are incredibly inclusive and make a concerted effort to support and work with the LGBTQ community. If you want to experience gay life in Australia, this is a really great place to start.

What are the best gay events that take place in your city each year?
This is easy! Hands down Mardi Gras in early March and the weeks leading up to it are amazing. The parade, parties, cultural events, LGBT film festival, "Queer Thinking", street fairs and more make this a busy gay time of the year. Other than that, throughout the year there are heaps of gay-themed events, theater, celebrations at the Opera House, themed dance parties, and plenty of public holiday events. Things are a bit quieter in the winter months, but always busy during our long beautiful summer.
We only have 48 hours in your city. What can’t we miss?
Taking the Sydney Ferry to Manly Beach for a swim, dinner and sundowner drinks on the wharf. Doing all or part of the Bondi to Maroubra beach walk will give you stunning views close to the city. A guided tour of the Opera House to go backstage and hear the story behind this architectural trend setter. Get your pop culture fix at the Powerhouse Museum, it often has traveling exhibits like "Star Wars", "George Michael and Wham" and "Kylie through the Ages". Sydney has so much to offer that 48 hours really wouldn’t do it justice, but with these tips you can't really go wrong.
What’s your favorite gay place to grab a bite for lunch? A nice dinner?
Lunch at the East Village Hotel rooftop. They offer great views of Darlinghurst and the Sydney skyline. You should try to have dinner at The Butler in Potts Point. They have great food, a really cool vibe and breathtaking views with a hip crowd. I also like to enjoy the booming ambiance and a drink at the Stonewall.

A gay place for brunch on weekends?
The Rusty Rabbit is my standard for a good brunch. The waiters are super friendly (not to mention exceedingly cute). They really know how to work it and you are sure to have a nice time. They have waffles, some healthy options and even fried chicken. The interior is really old Sydney sandstone, so you can soak up some local history as an accompaniment to the eye candy.
We’re ready to party! What are the best gay clubs?
The Green Park Hotel has a friendly older crowd and good DJs. If you love 80s music, The Palms on Oxford Street is totally the right choice. The Imperial in Newtown is funky and alternative, and the big gay club if you’re looking for a unique experience. Arq is pumping on weekends - it’s a wild party. There really are so many great options in Sydney. But you’ve got to explore and find the right place for you. If I could only recommend a few… The Oxford has an alternative vibe, The Imperial is funky and fresh, while the Bear Bar caters to everything bear… and their numerous admirers.
Are there any places related to LGBTQ history?
Yes, the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Holocaust Memorial which is in Green Park. That is a must-see. I am so proud to live in one of the few cities that commemorates the loss of lives in the LGBTQ community during the Second World War. There is also a new rainbow-shaped rainbow crossing in Taylor Square for your most instagrammable moment of your holiday.
Can you share a secret or little-known place to visit in your city?
Wendy's secret garden in Lavender Bay overlooks the Harbour Bridge and Opera House. It is a beautiful spot and not very frequented. It is a pretty magical place with a really touching back story. I highly recommend it, and it will add a cultural nuance to your trip. I am giving you all of my secrets :)

Any beaches, parks or best other places to chill out?
Sydney's beaches get crowded in the summer. The best hidden one is Washaway Beach on the North Shore. It's a hike to get there and a climb down. However, once you're there - you've got it mostly to yourself. There will just be a few other naked people. Otherwise the clothing-optional beach in the Royal National Park, Werrong Beach, can make for a really good day trip if you are feeling up to the occasion.
Where you can we get the best view of Sydney?
Watsons Bay! You can take the ferry or bus there and back and enjoy some of our world-famous fish and chips in the process. Another option would be on top of the Sydney Tower. You could also rent a helicopter if you want to drop some cash. It seems extravagant, but I know a couple who did this for their honeymoon and raved about the experience. But to be honest, there are so many beautiful things to see - you will not be disappointed. A trip down under will inspire you through the country's exotic nature, the beautiful people, and the warm climate.
