The Reveal

HIGHLIGHTS Welcome to the Turquoise Tunnel! Step into this mid-century modern "rumpus room" with its original turquoise and gold bar. Bring your mini-bottles!

This 1955 split-level ranch home welcomes you to its private basement apartment, with quick access by car or public transit to the best of Portland. Private entry, swingin’ bar and living room, daylight bedroom, and private bathroom.

LODGING TAX IS EXTRA You'll save more than 7.5% in lodging taxes since it's just outside Portland city limits, free of all their fees. But I'll have to collect Clackamas County tax of 6% manually after you book since Misterb&b isn't collecting automatically.

THE SPACE It's a partial daylight basement that sleeps up to four people. Your private entrance and bedroom have large daylight windows, while the bar and cozy living room are windowless and fully underground for safe cocktail consumption and protection from nuclear fallout (the year is 1955, after all).

Explore all the best of nearby urban Portland, then retreat to your suburban refuge for cocktails and streaming Netflix (wait, that didn't exist in the Fifties!...)

GUEST ACCESS Laundry room shared with hosts. Feel free to use it at any time of day or night. Free laundry soap provided.

INTERACTION WITH GUESTS We live upstairs and would only bump into you in the laundry room or outside. But we're happy to chat over a coffee or drink and offer local tips, as time allows.

THINGS YOU MIGHT LIKE AND DISLIKE

Dislike? -No daylight windows in the living room and bar area. -Occasional noise of the furnace turning on and off in the chilly season (it’s located in the laundry area but can be heard from the living room and TV area). -No full kitchen for cooking elaborate, large meals, but the narrow cocktail bar kitchen is surprisingly suitable for prepping food. -Not located in an exciting urban neighborhood. -Neighbor has a few dogs (Labrador retrievers). When you enter/exit your space, one of them tends to bark loudly at you. But they're kept locked behind a fence.

Like? -Cool vintage design and fun "Mad Men" era cocktail bar -Spacious floor plan (approx 800+ square feet, three separate rooms) -Quiet and safe location at the end of a dead-end street -Cozy space and working fireplace

I used to do communications work on city planning projects but am now a schoolteacher. I love cities, and thankfully Portland is more sophisticated than its small size. When traveling, I like to go on architectural walking tours, meet new people, and ride public transit a little too much. As a guest, I'm friendly but quiet. I'm a homeowner and I will respect your space. As a host, I have earned the "Superhost" badge on misterbnb's main competitor whose name also contains "bnb." ;-)

Nearby Attractions

It's a suburban location but a quick drive or public transit trip to the fun of Portland.

HIGHLIGHTS -Willamette River for hiking, boating, and (June-Sept) swimming -Sellwood village neighborhood of SE Portland nearby -Oaks Bottom wildlife refuge and Springwater Corridor Trail -Downtown Portland and the east side with cafes, restaurants, bars, bike lanes, etc.

MORE DETAIL The house is in Milwaukie, Oregon, a woodsy suburb bordering southeast Portland and is near the Willamette River. It's a quiet suburb, but a quick drive to Portland or an easy ride on public transit via light rail.

You can easily get to the quaint Portland neighborhood of Sellwood and farther north to the food, fun, and culture of inner SE Portland and downtown Portland.

GETTING AROUND Many of our guests have found it easiest to have a car, but it's not hard to get around without one, relying on public transit. We have a beautiful new light rail line connecting us to Portland (the MAX Orange Line).

DRIVING --5 min to charming village-like neighborhood of Sellwood in SE Portland with shops, cafes, bars --13 min to inner Southeast and downtown Portland (longer during rush hour)

PUBLIC TRANSIT --7 to 10 minute walk from house to transit stop at Park Avenue for the MAX Orange Line train. Frequent service. $2.50 for a two and a half hour ticket or $5 for unlimited one-day pass. Visit TriMet website for details. --20 min ride to South Waterfront neighborhood, scenic aerial tram ride, and Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) --25 min ride to downtown Portland at PSU

For airport directions, scroll down to bottom.

BIKE --10 min to downtown Milwaukie with only a few restaurants and bars (but not as many as Sellwood) --20 min to charming village of Sellwood via the Trolley Trail, through Milwaukie Riverfront Park, and north on SE 17th Ave.

CAR SHARING Two of the big car sharing companies do business in Portland -- Car2Go and Zipcar. I find Car2Go to be the most useful, since they allow one-way rentals. You'd have to be a member already from another city. The only challenge is that Car2Go's "home area" doesn't extend all the way south to our house, but it is useful once you're in Sellwood or points north. You can leave a Car2Go at the park and ride lot at SE Tacoma / Johnson Creek if you park it on the far northwest corner of the lot. From there, you can catch the MAX train two stops south to Park Avenue and walk back to our house.

UBER and LYFT Uber and Lyft operate freely in Portland area. Obviously you need to have a smartphone and download the app to use these services. FYI, Lyft requires iOS 8 or higher on your iPhone.

FROM PORTLAND AIRPORT...

Driving: 16 miles / 22 minutes (without traffic).

Taxi: Not sure of cost, probably at least $30 or more. The most direct route is via Interstate 205 south to Clackamas Town Center, then west on Harmony Road.

Uber and Lyft: They both operate in Portland and its suburbs, including for airport pickup and drop off. Obviously you need to have a smartphone and download the app to use these services.

Public transit: Takes about 90 minutes via MAX Red Line and Orange Line. --Take the TriMet MAX light rail Red Line to Portland City Center. --Exit train at Mall / SW 5th Ave MAX station. --Transfer to MAX Orange Line train by walking across 5th Ave to the sidewalk with signs for MAX Orange Line to Milwaukie. It's right there.

HOUSE RULES You are required to have fun and relax, but... NO smoking indoors, ever. Outdoors is fine if you're considerate of anyone nearby and also clean up your butts and *safely* dispose of them. NO candles or open flame NO pets (a service animal with documentation might be possible) NO big parties, but you're welcome to invite a few friends over NO loud behavior when entering and exiting the house after dark (we have a neighbor right next door) - GUEST CLARITY: The person making the reservation must be the same person who plans to stay. If you're trying to book for a friend, business colleague, or family member, I need to know that in advance so we can discuss details. - CHILDREN COUNT: Every person in your group must be included in the guest numbers, whether an adult, child, toddler, or baby. - QUIET, PLEASE. After dark when entering and exiting house, no loud talking since neighbors are sleeping, some with their windows open. - SOUND travels a bit between the upstairs and downstairs. From 10pm-8am daily, please keep the noise reasonable in your entry room and bedroom, since they're below the upstairs bedrooms where people are sleeping. But you're welcome to have fun at full volume in your living room and bar, with the bedroom door closed. - NO PARTIES, but you're welcome to invite a few friends over to visit. - DON'T BURN IT DOWN. No candles, open flame, incense, or similar. - NO SMOKING indoors, ever. Outdoors is fine if you're considerate of anyone nearby and also clean up your butts and *safely* dispose of them. - NO VAPING indoors. - WEED: Using recreational cannabis? Please store it in your car or outdoors. The smell of raw bud is hard to get rid of for the next guest. - SCENTS: Please be considerate about using perfumes and scents, since other guests would like to enjoy a relatively scent-free space (and it's hard to remove strong perfume smells from the sofa). - CAR ALARMS and HORNS. If you're coming in a car that honks its horn every time you lock/unlock the doors, please look into how you can disable that feature, if possible. It's very disturbing to my neighbors when it happens late at night. -BACON: So yes, bacon is delicious. But this space has no good way to vent strong cooking odors like bacon. The airborne grease sticks to the walls and make the place smell for weeks. So please don't cook bacon. Instead, why not try the delicious maple bacon donut at Voodoo Donuts in Portland? :-) - INTERNET: No downloading of illegal or pirated content using the Internet connection. - NO GUNS on the property. - WAIVER. You assume all risk of injury, accident or illness on the property. You assume responsibility for any and all damage in excess of normal wear and tear. Despite that long list, I'm actually pretty chill. ;-) Thanks and enjoy your stay!
