The Reveal

The condominium was professionally decorated and almost everything was made to order from the unique glass bookshelves to the tall blond wooden bases and head boards. In South Africa we do not differentiate between a condominium, however the Latin translation of, "con", meaning together, combined with "dominium", meaning ownership describes our apartment/condominium perfectly as defined in North America. We have a House Owners Association and a Body Corporate that maintains everything perfectly at whatever cost it requires, whether we agree or not. This ensures that the estate consisting of 1000 homeowners is meticulously maintained and managed. Security is world class and utilizes anything from fingerprints to hundreds of cameras that are monitored ********. Consequently crime is non existent and most locals don't bother to lock doors or pick up bicycles, skateboards etc lying about. The same goes for unguarded kayaks, canoes and paddle-skis. After living in the estate for 14 years, I'm unaware of a single incident of theft. Living in such a secure cocoon one quickly forgets that most of the world does not. We have spent many years traveling around the world and art from our travels decorates our walls. Our condo enjoys the ultimate placement from a view perspective where incredible water views can be enjoyed from every spot in the condo. This canal estate is the best in the country as it is essentially a seawater lake that lies a few metres adjacent to the warm Indian Ocean, which means a sea water swim is on your doorstep literally. Should you choose just to swim in the lake-like area around the habituated islands the water temperature even in winter exceeds 20 degrees Celsius and the water quality is consistently monitored for its quality by scientists. Thus far the Marina Martinique competes with the best in the world for water qaulity and the absence of harmful bacteria and is world renowned for swimming competitions. Diving into a canal is safe as the depth on the sides is about 1,7 m and there are pool type steps everywhere to climb out from. We are fortunate that as the first homeowner in Kingston I had access to every unit and picking 22 Kingston was an obvious choice as no other unit compared in terms of the views, in combination with privacy and shelter. It is one of only 9 condos enjoying the privilege of facing east as well as North, which means the prevailing east bound winds from Cape Town have no impact on Barbecues or this superb weather shelter, no matter the weather conditions. Prior to moving in as the first resident in Kingston place, I added many additional plug points and converted all the lighting to be capable of dimming. Even the verandah's lighting was changed to suit the more romantic ambience and even the barbeque's lighting can dim. As artists, writers and publishers we love reading so we have a marvelous collection of books that should you fail to finish reading it you are welcome to keep it as a souvenir. We have plenty of books and simply stock up regularly. Besides we hope that when you return you will find some new books. This tranquil space is easy to fall in love with and we hope to see you soon again. There is a musical selection that enhances any form of meditation even if it is just some Mozart while you try your hand at cooking in the perfectly equipped kitchen. The fun of cooking is that you always have northern and southern views and hopefully an appreciative audience.

As a native Afrikaans speaker, which is closely related to Dutch and Flemish, I studied psychology in English and worked for a team of psychometrists under the supervision of a psychologist to learn more in an actual testing and research environment. Then I worked for 5 years in HR before I migrated to Johannesburg to try my hand at earning commission. During this period Johannesburg had a vibrant gay community and I founded the first gay business association (The Family Business) in Africa in 1992, which evolved into the GAY PAGES magazine. We organised outrageous cabaret shows at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre and was guided by my theatre mentor, Bernard Jay who was Divine's manager back in the US. The first edition of the GAY PAGES was born on 10 December 1994. This date of 10 December is also the date that the new South African Constitution was signed by Nelson Mandela in 1998. This date to celebrate human rights was also adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December 1948. Today the Gay Pages this is one of the 20 oldest printed gay glossy magazines in the world and is archived in different places, including in the USA. Our apartment is filled with a great selection of gay books and magazines and guests do get the feeling that they know me after a few days, even if I am seldom there, but I'm always immediately available telephonically. Any of our guests are welcome to grab a book or magazine as a souvenir. I'm always in contact and am happy to offer advice about Port Elizabeth, the Garden Route, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Botswana or Namibia. In the interim you van get to know us by visiting our website ******** with over 8000 globally relevant articles. We love traveling and have explored over 100 of South Africa's game lodges. Having lived half my life in different cities I realised a long time ago that every place has some interesting characteristics and travel teaches us to appreciate that. The only way for us to understand the fascinating world that we live in is to explore and to thrive in our discovery of so many things. We hope to guide explorers of the Eastern Cape and South Africa to discover the reason why South Africa has such a large number of returning visitors annually. This is a little piece of paradise that is not on the global map, yet when you take a stroll on Paradise Beach observing frolicking dolphins metres away from you then you grasp why this is such a special place. No wonder the local community refused to allow oil exploration in an area that experts believe has huge natural resources. It reminds me of Unobtanium in Avatar. A small number of conservationists are trying to protect the natural unspoiled beauty of such a special and rare place in the world. Naturally and sadly it's a battle that will be lost, as we are sitting on massive energy resources consisting of helium, oil and gas. Enough to solve significant energy issues caused by the Ukraine war. So get here while the South African Rand is undervalued by 300% and the natural habitat is exquisite.

Nearby Attractions

In sleepy surfer communities there are few establishments that are exclusively gay, but the ratio of gorgeous and athletic young men are high! Many of these athletes spend months at a time in J Bay and they hail from all over the world and participate in surfing competitions. Surfing condition are considered to some of the best globally and there are always jobs available for surfers wishing to teach less experienced surfers. In the summer months most restaurants are open by 11h00 in the morning and take the last orders at about 21h00. The climate is pleasant and the ocean will seldom drop below 17 degrees Celsius in winter. Even in Winter the sun rises early and it's not unusual to find many shops open from before 08h00 as the beaches attract crowds before 09h00. Dreading crowded beaches personally even when sprinkled with hunks, I head to Paradise Beach next to the Marina Martinique which is a massive beach which requires a few hours if you wish to walk to St Francis Bay. Start at 05h00 and walk at a brisk pace and use plenty of sunburn lotion. Some people cycle this stretch when tides play along. Any type of craft can be rented in St Francis where the fresh water canals welcome motorised boats and jet skis. St Francis by road is a 15 minute drive and Humansdorp takes about 12 minutes. Visit a charming restaurant, " La Chameleon where all kinds of local cuisine is served at rock bottom prices. Should you wish to explore further you could simply head West and discover plenty of towns after Stormsriver, which is famous for bungee jumping and Keurboomstrand where the river exploration is well worth your effort. Slightly further you will find Plettenberg Bay which is perfect for whale watching and drooling at the imported talent from just about anywhere. Another short drive takes you to Knysna a picturesque town stuck in a timewarp and famous for a book named, "Circles in a forest." It's about the secretive Knysna elephants that could vanish in a heartbeat in this ancient jungle with trees like Avatar. The best way to explore this trip is start from Port Elizabeth, as then you'll have the sun behind you and just about everything opens a little earlier than in Cape Town. There are also many International flights departing directly from Cape Town. The Garden Route is one of the prettiest roads in the world and stretches about 800km from East to West but you'll never be further than an hour from infrastructure and the roads are generally well maintained.

Host recommendations

We welcome you to our pristine apartment, but request that you remove your shoes in the entrance foyer. After a day or two you'll become a barefoot local and there are water taps to wash your feet as you park at Kingston Place after hunting for talent or dolphins at the beach. No smoking is allowed, but you are welcome to use any condiments or anything else you need. Depending on the kindness of your predecessor guests, you should find wine, which you are welcome too try. Please replace it for the benefit of others who follow you in their quest to discover the magic of this quiet piece of paradise. We have a full laundry service should you need, but the condo is fully equipped to wash and dry clothing. Susan Van Zyl my neighbour at nr 20 directly below us maintains the apartment and owns a laundromat, so rather conveniently any washing and ironing can be done at prices that will revive your sense of humour. Jacques Kritzinger a local member of the family owns a business named, "Cleaning Faeries" and he works with Susan in a team to ensure that there are never any problems or unresolved issues. Our comprehensive network also includes a mechanic and a handyman, should your car rental end up with a flat battery. In which case we have jumper cables and a useful variety of tools that would make any members of the butcher variety grin with delight. Hopefully they will find as much joy in the dangerously sharp chefs knifes. Boerewors is a famous South African delicacy that is badly copied globally. Please visit Beesland on the corner of Woltemade street and Da Gama Drive almost next door to J Bay tourism. They produce spectacular boerewors which is amongst the best in South Africa and the quality of their steaks and Karoo lamb is textbook quality. If you are from countries like the US, Canada or the EU the pricing would astound you. The primary reason is that the South African rand is drastically undervalued which gives you at least 300% more bang for your buck. If you're to lazy to cook you'll be delighted by the number of restaurants that will sell you spectacular food at a fraction of what the raw products cost back home. Trawlers, about 200 metres from Beesland will provide you with ultra fresh seafood procured that morning and to feed two hungry surfers with a variety of seafood should set you back less than 10 USD. Their quality is hard to match anywhere due to the incredible local calamari which is superior to baby Falkands calamari tubes, as well as the hake and prawns which never encounter deep freezes. Classical from the ocean to the table cuisine. Most offshore visitors become culinary visitors to this region with it's unsurpassed reputation for remarkable food unmatched on any pricing scale locally or globally. If you enjoy a bit of action while you eat then Kichen Windows is another restaurant on the beach where you have a perfect ocean view while enjoying anything from a paella to pizza or grilled butterflied prawns. Gay nightlife can be found back in Port Elizabeth in the traditional format, but Jeffreys bay has its own quiet gay community that may be well worth getting to know.
