Gay Pride São Paulo

About São Paulo Gay Pride

São Paulo Gay Pride (officially La Parada do Orgulho GLBT de São Paulo) is an annual pride celebration that colors the city streets every year in June. São Paulo Gay Pride first started in 1997, with roughly 2,000 participants, but it is now recognized as the biggest Pride Parade in the world, attracting an estimated three to five million participants each year. This makes it hands-down South America's largest Pride, with the Guiness World Records even claiming it as the World's Largest Pride from 2006 to 2016. Dating app, Grindr, has also elected it the best Pride in the world, so really is there any reason not to attend?

Every year, São Paulo Gay Pride comprises an incredible pride parade which travels down the Avenida Paulista, and usually takes place on the Sunday after the Corpus Christis holiday. While the first pride gathering took place in 1997, the first São Paulo Gay Pride that was officially organized by APOGLBT – (Pride Association of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transexuals) transpired in 1999. The organization's continued motivation comes from a collective fight for a more just and inclusive society that recognizes equal rights and condemns any form of discrimination based on age, orientation, gender, or race.

On top of the Pride Parade, there are a range of LGBTQ-related activities and events which take place during São Paulo Gay Pride. In fact, while the official schedule runs for five days, things start happening in the city three weeks before the final weekend. Expect everything from concerts, dance performances, fairs, street markets and queer-related debates and plays. So whether you like the idea of engaging in some queer-related entertainment, or you're already set on attending the São Paulo Pride Parade, there is always something for everyone at São Paulo Gay Pride. So do you think you've got the stamina to make a go of Gay Pride São Paulo? We hope so!

Program for São Paulo Gay Pride

The following is the event program for 2020. Stay tuned for the 2021 program.

This will be the 23rd edition of Gay Pride São Paulo, and the theme will be 50 years since Stonewall. As per usual its key event will be the Pride Parade. For 2019, the parade is taking place on Sunday, June 23. It will start at 12pm, outside the Museum of Art of São Paulo, which is located on one of the city's main avenues, Avenida Paulista. There will be roughly 25 different colorful floats, which are referred to as 'trio eletricos'.

While the main event takes place on Sunday, June 23, the Pride celebrations start the week before, on Tuesday, June 18. São Paulo gayborhoods, Frei Caneca and Largo do Arouche, come alive throughout the day, while popular clubs such as The Week are packed most nights.

Whether you plan to just march in the Parade on Sunday, or you're intending to take part in all the week-long celebrations, we can assure you Pride São Paulo is set to be one of the top gay prides of 2019.
