Antwerp is a city I came to on a diamond industry story and stayed for the gay scene, which tells you something about how destinations surprise you. The port city has a queer history connected to the arts, the fashion industry, and the Flemish culture that has always had a productive irreverence toward authority. The gay neighbourhood is centred around the Schuttershofstraat and Kammenstraat area - compact and walkable, with venues serving a community that feels genuinely embedded in the city rather than corralled into a district. Antwerp Pride in August is one of the better regional Pride events in Belgium. The fashion week connection means the city fills with a creative, internationally gay-friendly crowd several times a year. What I find most compelling about Antwerp is the architecture: the Plantin-Moretus printing house, the Rubens house, the central station that is genuinely one of the great railway stations of Europe. The cathedral, visible from almost every corner of the old town, gives the city a medieval verticality that distinguishes it from Brussels.
