Malta is without a doubt a neglected destination for gay and lesbian travelers. However, it is a tourist destination that could be very interesting for those who are looking for a different kind of vacation.
This destination is probably not the most gay friendly. There is still a strong presence of religion which still dominates some cultural choices. In a recent survey, several Maltese gay and lesbian rights activist associations stated that the homosexual community in large majority wanted to leave the island to live new experiences.
Living in Malta as a homosexual is probably less obvious than in some other European countries. When you are a tourist, the vision is often different from the reality. However, there is a lot to do on this island.
Beaches
The island of Malta has a pleasant climate for most of the year. Its beaches are one of the highlights for gay tourists visiting the island. One of the most interesting is the beach of St. Julian and the beach of Sliema.
The catacombs of Saint Agatha
For tourists who love history and learning a little more, the catacombs of St. Agatha will seduce you. This natural cave once served as a refuge for Christians who fled Italy. The atmosphere of this place is unique, which makes it still quite mysterious.
Gay nightlife
Unfortunately, you don't go to Malta to party and dance the night away. The island offers very few places for gays and lesbians. Several have closed, others are trying to open. However, if you miss the gay friendly spirit on a weekend night, go to the Klozet Club and the Bar Tom.
Megalithic temples
If there's one thing you can't miss on your trip, it's the Megalithic Temples of Malta. These 4 temples are on the UNESCO World Heritage list and are located on the island of Gozoe.
Gay Pride
Despite what you might think, Malta does have its own pride march. For gay and lesbian travelers who visit the island during the event, be aware that it is usually held in July. Malta's Gay Pride is not as big as those in Paris or London. However, it is done with a lot of fun and enjoyment. It is also combined with the LGBT film festival, which could become a good alternative for your evenings.
The island of Malta has much more to offer than just five tourist attractions. If you're looking for a quiet seaside destination, while walking the island to make some historical discoveries, without the glitz and glamour, this is definitely a great place. Pack your bags and head to your nearest airport, Valletta!
