Torre del Lago, the gay oasis of Italy

Torre del Lago, the gay oasis of Italy
Torre del Lago, Italy's gay beach destination

In Torre del Lago, the strains of opera are often thought to be where it all started. It’s home to the Puccini Festival, a cultural event founded in tribute to the composer who spent much of his life in this Viareggio suburb, nestled on the Versilian coast in Tuscany.

Back in the 1960s, thousands of opera aficionados—including a notable gay contingent—were charmed by this coastal gem, tucked between a serene lake and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Fast forward half a century and Torre del Lago has emerged as Italy's only expressly gay-friendly destination, distinguished by a collection of LGBT-centric venues unrivaled on the peninsula.

Despite their allure, Torre del Lago and Viareggio often receive scant mention in travel guides. The Tuscan coast's beauty is somewhat obscured by the luminous reputations of Florence, Siena, and even Lucca. Yet, the Versilia region, just south of Pisa, boasts attractions that can captivate summer visitors with a taste for the fine arts or the area's Latin allure.

One of the region's crowning glories is the stunning expanse of beach stretching endlessly between Torre del Lago and Viareggio—miles of soft sand and crystal-clear waters. With no concrete structures to mar the view, the beach is backed by a vast protected pine forest, providing a tranquil escape from the world. It is a true haven of relaxation, offering a variety of leisurely pleasures.

For a touch of Italian beach culture, you might choose the deckchairs and parasols offered at seaside resorts. In Torre del Lago, make your way to the end of Viale Europa, towards Viareggio, to discover the gay area and the private beach, Le Dune. There, you’ll often find a lively beach volleyball game underway. The wooden walkway to the sea feels like a fashion runway for swimwear. While the vibe can sometimes lean towards the showy and gossipy, it generally embodies a friendly afternoon at the beach with pals.

For those who’d rather not spend approximately 15 euros a day on sunbeds and umbrellas or who prefer more open space, the solution lies just past the last of the private beaches. Aim for the free beach of La Lecciona, situated midway between Torre del Lago and Viareggio, accessible with a ten-minute stroll.

La Lecciona, a rarity in Italy, is a clean and well-preserved free zone. The gay section is identifiable by a rainbow flag and the somewhat more assertive glances exchanged... Secluded from the family-friendly areas, some men confidently sunbathe in the nude, while others, more discreetly, explore the nearby groves. The social atmosphere here is not about overt flirtation, as seen on some other European gay beaches. Instead, there's a distance maintained, a dance of subtleties, an air of 'this is not why I'm here'...

This congenial spirit carries over to the post-beach aperitivo. Across Viale Europa, bars adorned with rainbow flags welcome patrons to complimentary buffets of cold salads, tapas, and starters—yours to enjoy with the purchase of a drink. Indulging in a Panzanella or a white bean salad on the terrace of Stupid!a, as the sun dips below the horizon and electro tunes set, the mood is nothing short of delightful.

As evening falls, the bars briefly empty, only to refill after 11 p.m. Next, you might head to one of the many eateries along the Viale, where the fare is decent without breaking the bank. Despite the establishments' efforts to project a very gay-friendly image, complete with rainbow banners and drag-queen waitstaff, the clientele is quite diverse. It’s common to see heterosexual couples meandering through the gay section of Viale...

As dusk descends, the largest bars on the Viale, Mamma Mia and Stupid!a, vie for attention with a cacophony of sound and spectacle. The action unfolds on outdoor stages, showcasing a medley of drag-queen acts, 'most handsome guy' contests, and comedic rants from inebriated performers. The vibe is exuberantly untamed—nothing too risqué or racy—and as the music swells, the street transforms into a spontaneous open-air dance party.

The celebrations reach their zenith in mid-August with Gay Fat Tuesday, an extensive LGBT festival that weaves together parades and unforgettable soirees with serious political and cultural dialogues. August marks the pinnacle of activity in Torre del Lago's marina, not just because the Italians fervently embrace their holiday season but also because it coincides with the bustling Puccini Festival.
