Understory is a trans-owned and operated café in the heart of Toronto's historic Church-Wellesley Village, built by partners Dani and Rowan as the cozy, quiet "third space" the neighborhood had been missing since Glad Day Bookshop moved on. Named for the layer of forest life that flourishes beneath the canopy, away from the spotlight, it's conceived as a metaphor for the queer community itself: a calm, welcoming place to share passions beyond nightlife before heading back out to the rest of the Village. The coffee is great, the pastries and sandwiches are solid, and a curated wine selection rounds things out by evening, all served in a warm, genuinely inclusive space built around community first.
