I have come back to Montpellier more times than I planned, and that always tells you something about a city. What surprises first-time visitors is how young it feels - not young in a transient student-city way, but genuinely alive, with a LGBTQ+ community that has roots in the university culture and the warmth of the south. The Place de la Comedie is the city's living room, and you feel the ease of it quickly: a city where being gay is simply unremarkable. Montpellier has a compact, walkable centre that rewards slow afternoons - the Ecusson, the medieval streets of the old town, the bars around the rue de la Friperie that become properly busy after midnight.
