"My stay at the American Hotel/Hostel was overall very good. I rarely stay at a hostel but I needed this trip to stay on budget. Choosing to stay at the American Hotel/Hostel helped me keep that goal. The first thing I noticed was all the PRIDE flags greeting you at the door. Somehow it made me feel like this was a safe space and certainly welcoming. For the most part, the staff was nice, friendly, and very helpful. A mostly International clientele which is what I expected and liked. As a black gay traveler, the American Hotel/Hostel environment was a good, accepting fit. I'd tried to rent a private room through Mister BandB with hosts (in mostly white gay male households) but all 7 requests were either declined or expired so I turned to the American Hotel/Hostel and it worked. By far, my worst experience here would be sleeping in a male dorm room with someone who snored violently. If I had to stay here again, I would opt for a private room instead of the cheaper, four-bed male dorm and risk being in the room with a person with bad behavior or sleeping habits. Otherwise, it was relatively clean, safe, somewhat quiet, affordable, and centrally located. Public transit options are right outside the door. It’s also located within walking distance of some of Seattle’s iconic tourist attractions. And, it sits just a few steps from the Chinatown gate city landmark. All in all, a good, valued stay. It comes with a free breakfast too and incredible access to a full kitchen to prepare meals whenever you want."

"No-frills, high-value property, which is just what I was looking for. Fantastic location; easy walk to downtown in one direction or to the gayborhood (Broadway/Pike/Pine) in the other. Retro vibe, though not in a particularly hip way. Still, very clean with friendly, happy-to-help staff. Great to know about this hidden gem."

"Hostel has a convenient location right next to the Pike Place Market and is LGBTQ friendly. You can make your own eggs for breakfast, they offer also cereals, bread and of course coffee and tea. It is not hostel's fault, but Seattle has issues with homlessness, so when you walk outside the door, you run into homeless people which is not this nice, if you are alone and want to go out at night. Then my bed missed half of curtain, so people could see me when sleeping."

"Great place to stay. Check in was easy and the workers I encountered were helpful and kind. Parking (~$35/nite) is across the street, uncovered, and narrow stalls. Lots of homeless people around (not the fault of the hotel, just part of the city), who made a lot of inappropriate comments, but did not try to follow me inside. The room was nice, but house cleaning did leave a gross looking rag in one of the drawers. Accommodations were good though. Overall happy with my stay and the employees I interacted with"
