OM MANI PADME HUM
If Mani refers to the jewel, Padme is used to describe the lotus. Considered the most sacred flower in India (the country even puts it on its flag), the lotus carries with it ideas of wisdom and purity. It's worth noting that this plant grows in mud, but closes up when the wind blows to preserve its beauty.
The philosophical message is clear: like the lotus flower, Padme invites us to develop our wisdom in the midst of dirt and defilement (our physical world), and never to let external aggression get to us (or rather, to our peace). Padme thus represents independence, the distinction between the essential and the accessory, and peace.
