The Reveal

Sophora sits in the hamlet of Elst, just outside Brakel, where the Flemish Ardennes fold into low green hills and the loudest sound is the wind moving through the trees. It is a family home, newly rebuilt from the ground up on the same land where the family's grandparents once lived, and named after the honey tree they planted here generations ago.

The history is not in the walls but in the place itself: a spot this family has gathered on for as long as anyone remembers. Nine bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. A walled garden with a heated pool and a sauna, hidden from the world. And all around it, the deep quiet of the hills.

This is a house for being together and for doing nothing at all, made for families and groups who want room to breathe without giving anything up.

Sophora is part of the moroww collection, which means every detail was checked against a single standard before you arrive. You come in through your own entrance, into a long hall lined with coat hooks and photographs, the story of the family laid out along the wall before you have even set down your bags. From there the house opens around the kitchen and the long dining table, the place everything circles back to. Morning coffee while the light comes up. The slow clatter of a meal being made by too many hands. A full house can cook here without anyone getting in the way: oven, dishwasher, coffee maker, room to spread out.

Nine bedrooms run off the house, each with a double bed and its own private bathroom, so when the day winds down everyone has a corner to disappear into. One of them sits on the ground floor and is fully accessible, with a bathroom designed to match, so the house stays open to everyone in the group.

Outside, behind warm walls, a heated pool waits with the sauna beside it, sheltered and entirely your own. There is a barbecue and seating for the long evenings, the kind that start at dinner and end under the stars without anyone noticing the hour.

Cleaning and fresh linen are taken care of before you arrive, so the house is ready and quiet when you walk in. The whole house and the walled garden are yours for the length of your stay. No shared spaces, no other guests, no one passing through. Your own private entrance, and free private parking on the grounds. Elst is a quiet village within Brakel, set in the rolling country of the Flemish Ardennes where the landscape is all green hills, windmills, knotted willows and old farmhouses. This is one of the most picturesque pockets of the region, and it is walking and cycling land through and through.

The narrow lanes and steep climbs of the spring classics are right outside the door, the Leberg among them, a short brutal hill the Tour of Flanders knows well. The village has its own quiet character: a watermill that traces back more than a thousand years, and a local pancake, the geuteling, that Elst is known for and bakes only in the deep of winter.

When you want a little life, Brakel, Geraardsbergen and Oudenaarde are close by for markets, a long lunch and a feel for how people live here. And though it feels far from everything, it isn't. Ghent is around forty minutes by car, Brussels around an hour, and Oudenaarde, the heart of Flanders' cycling country, is closer still. Antwerp and the coast are both comfortable day trips.

You get the deep quiet of the hills with the cities never quite out of reach. A car is the easiest way to reach Sophora and to wander the region. Ghent is around forty minutes away and Brussels around an hour by car. The lanes around the house are made for cycling, and there is space on the grounds to keep bikes safely. You book Sophora through moroww, where every home is checked against a single standard before you arrive. From the moment your stay is confirmed, you are in direct contact with your hosts, the family who knows this house best and looks after it with real care. They are reachable before and during your stay, and close by should you need anything.

The pool is heated from May through September. Depending on the outdoor temperature the season can start a little earlier or run a little later, but once it turns cold the heating is switched off.
