The Reveal

Considered a safe space for international, multicultural, people of color, LBGTQ guests and residents, The Bowers House Writers Retreat welcomes guests and artists for overnight stays and longer term residencies when available. The facility is located in a small town that looks like it is 1920 and kitchens, a living room and laundry and dining room are open for use. Often residents group together to prepare meals, Customized meals and transportation can be arranged, and whole house rental is an option during certain times of the year. One owner, Charlie Read, is a Bowers Family member owner and his partner Dorjan Williams are often in residence in a separate area of the historic home. Private tours, catering and custom activities can be arranged during your stay.

Charlie Read is the fourth Bowers Family Member to own The Bowers House along with his life partner Dorjan Javas Williams. The Two run retreats and artists and musical programming of Bowers Hour at the historic hotel built in 1921. Charlie is a former communications and designer/illustrator for arts organizations including Ma-Yi Theatre Company in New York, Ikon Communications and the owner of a design and branding company Firewater Creative. Dorjan is owner of VOX POP Atlanta, a news organization covering African American individuals and businesses in Atlanta as well as a photojournalist for 11 Alive in Atlanta. The house may have a residency or artist alumni staying in the home during your stay, as the facility has been an artists retreat for over 15 years and also produces episodic programming of original music

Athens Georgia nightlife and culture are 40 minute drive, 5 miles to Lavonia or Royston for good restaurants and groceries, 15 minutes to Lake Hartwell attractions and 5 minutes to beautiful Victoria Bryant State Park. A winery owned by another branch of The Bowers Family is a walk away, and two gay campgrounds are within 20 minutes for day attendance.

Host recommendations

Well behaved dogs only are allowed, kept in bedrooms. No cats or other animals. No smoking indoors, No housekeeping during stay, laundry available. Guests are responsible for own meals and cleaning up well after meal preparation in one of the two kitchens. Guests will be informed if writers are in residence which requires quiet time during the day and consideration of artists needing privacy and peace.
