Religious altar inside the salt mines of Zipaquira. A Marian image can be seen inside a niche. This photograph evidences the devotion of the miners to the Virgin Mary. Currently ********, the Virgin of the Rosary of Guasá, patron saint of the miners, is venerated in the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá.
The salt mines of Zipaquirá are located in the department of Cundinamarca. They are the most important salt mines in the country, and are also ******** (also ******** exploitation of these deposits dates back to pre-Hispanic times. These mines, which were in the hands of the State, were concessioned in 2008 to private entrepreneurs.
