5 Steps to Keep Safe While Traveling Abroad As an LGBTQ+ Student

Traveling for vacation or doing a study abroad experience can be an exciting and life-changing experience for college students.. For LGBTQ+ students, however, it can also come with unique challenges and concerns, particularly when visiting countries with different social norms, cultural attitudes, and legal systems regarding LGBTQ+ rights. Unfortunately, it’s STILL not safe for LGBTQ+ folks to travel around the world without making sure they remain safe.

Though you may live in a city or attend an inclusive college, unfortunately, many places are not like this. In fact, same-sex relationships are criminalized in 64 countries worldwide, and in some of these nations, the punishment may include the death penalty - even in trendy spots like Dubai. This should be particularly worrisome for parents of LGBTQ+ students who know you’ll be traveling by yourself or with other students.

This is why knowing and understanding how to be safe anywhere you go in the world is critical. Here are five essential tips to help you navigate your travel experience with confidence and security.

1. Research Local LGBTQ+ Laws and Cultural Attitudes

Before booking your flight or setting foot in another country, it's vital to research the local laws and cultural attitudes regarding LGBTQ+ identities. Websites like the ILGA (International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association) provide updated reports on LGBTQ+ rights worldwide. Even in countries where being LGBTQ+ is legal, public displays of affection or open discussions might not be widely accepted. Some governments, such as the U.S. State Department or the UK Foreign Office, issue specific LGBTQ+ travel advisories (though less and less so in the U.S.). Platforms like Reddit, Facebook groups, or dedicated LGBTQ+ travel blogs - or misterb&b - can provide firsthand experiences from travelers who have been to your destination. Being informed about the legal landscape and societal attitudes will help you make safer and smarter choices during your trip.

2. Protect Your Privacy Online and Offline

In certain regions, expressing your LGBTQ+ identity openly may put you at risk. Managing your digital footprint and practicing caution in social interactions is essential to avoid unnecessary danger. Avoid using location tags on social media posts and limit the visibility of LGBTQ+ content to trusted friends. Use messaging apps with end-to-end encryption, like Signal or Telegram, which can help keep conversations private. If you're trans or non-binary and your ID does not match your gender presentation, consider carrying additional documentation that explains any discrepancies.

3. Choose LGBTQ+-Friendly Accommodations and Travel Providers

Selecting the right accommodations can significantly impact your travel experience. Some hotels, hostels, or rental properties may not welcome LGBTQ+ travelers, so it's essential to choose wisely. Websites like misterb&b offer safer options like hosts that are LGBTQ and that offer gay BNB’s, apartments, and gay hotels. Some major hotel chains openly support LGBTQ+ inclusivity, such as Marriott’s "Love Travels" campaign. Companies like Out Adventures and Rainbow Railroad offer travel services that cater to LGBTQ+ travelers. Websites like TripAdvisor and Google Reviews often have insights from other travelers about the inclusivity of a hotel or tour service. You may find local LGBTQ organizations in the country you’ll be traveling to find out how to find the safest spots to stay.

4. Have a Safety Plan & Network in Place

Even with thorough preparation, unexpected situations can quickly happen. It’s always a good idea to have a safety plan if you encounter any issues related to your identity or travel safety. Know your emergency contacts: Save the local emergency number in your phone and identify nearby LGBTQ+-friendly organizations or embassies. Let a trusted friend or family member (even several people) know your travel plans, including addresses and essential contacts. If your passport or ID is lost or confiscated, storing photocopies or digital backups securely can be helpful. If you’re traveling with friends, establish a discreet code word to signal when you feel unsafe. If you're unsure about the safety of a location, avoid engaging in discussions about LGBTQ+ topics in public or visiting unfamiliar areas alone.

5. Connect with Local LGBTQ+ Communities and Allies

Finding support networks in your destination country can significantly impact your experience. Engaging with LGBTQ+ communities and allies can provide valuable insights, resources, and a sense of belonging while you’re away from home. Many cities have LGBTQ+ support groups or student organizations that can provide guidance and social opportunities. Look for cafes, bookstores, and community centers that serve as safe spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals. Events are also great; Pride parades, film festivals, or advocacy events can be a great way to meet people in a safe environment. Instagram, Twitter, and Meetup are great platforms for finding local LGBTQ+ events and safe spaces. If you’re studying abroad, try to connect with LGBTQ+-friendly faculty members or student organizations on campus. Many universities also may have alumni groups abroad. Use that as a resource. At misterb&b, we have weere, which helps you connect with locals, join activities, and even couch hop, safely.

Traveling as an LGBTQ+ student can be incredibly rewarding; it’s an experience that can help you develop a well-rounded CV and impress future employers or graduate school admissions.. However,  it’s essential to prioritize safety and preparedness because you never know what you’re walking into. You can ensure a safer and more enjoyable journey by researching local laws, protecting your privacy, choosing LGBTQ+-friendly accommodations, having a safety plan, and connecting with local communities. While challenges may arise, being proactive and informed will empower you to make the most of your travels while staying true to yourself.

No matter where you go, always remember that your safety and well-being come first. Happy travels from misterb&b!
