CC Blooms

-
23-24 Greenside Place, EH1 3AA, Edinburgh, United Kingdom

CC Blooms is one of those Edinburgh institutions that almost every local gay man knows, whether he visits every weekend or simply ends up there after saying, “Just one drink.” Opened in 1994 and named after Bette Midler’s character in the film Beaches, this long-running LGBTQ+ bar and nightclub occupies a prime position beside the Edinburgh Playhouse, close to the top of Leith Walk and the bars around Broughton Street. After a major renovation completed in 2025, the venue combines a smarter new look with the lively, proudly queer identity that has made “CC’s” a central part of Edinburgh’s gay nightlife for more than three decades.

The experience changes noticeably as the day progresses. Earlier on, CC Blooms feels like a stylish and relaxed bar where visitors can stop for a cocktail, meet friends or grab something to eat before a performance at the Playhouse. The redesigned ground floor features rich colors, velvet seating, marble-topped tables and several different areas for drinking, dining and socializing. Original stone pillars and archways from the historic building remain visible, adding character beneath all the new polish. There is also some outdoor seating, useful when Edinburgh temporarily remembers that summer exists.

Food is deliberately casual and sociable. The menu favors hand-stretched pizzas, nachos, loaded wedges, chicken wings, fries and small plates designed for sharing. Vegetarian and vegan choices are generally available, making the venue convenient for a mixed group whose dietary negotiations are more complicated than the cocktail order. This is best understood as satisfying bar food rather than destination dining: ideal before a show, between drinks or when everyone suddenly realizes that dancing on an empty stomach was a terrible plan.

Later in the evening, the mood becomes louder and more energetic. Music takes over, the crowd grows and the venue shifts from cocktail bar to late-night party destination. The downstairs club provides the darker, sweatier side of the experience, with DJs, dancing and entertainment depending on the night. CC Blooms regularly hosts drag performances, themed parties and other queer events, although the program changes frequently and should be checked online before visiting.

The clientele is broad and mixed. Gay men remain at the heart of the venue, but CC Blooms welcomes the wider LGBTQ+ community, friends and respectful allies. Weekends can attract a particularly varied crowd, including students, theater audiences, birthday groups and visitors looking for one of Edinburgh’s best-known late-night addresses. Anyone expecting a men-only cruising bar will therefore be looking in the wrong place. This is a mainstream LGBTQ+ party venue: sociable, theatrical and usually at its best when the dance floor is busy.

Its central location makes CC Blooms an easy addition to an Edinburgh night out. It can serve as the first stop before exploring Broughton Street, or as the final destination once nearby pubs begin winding down. During the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and other major events, the atmosphere can become especially animated, and queues or door controls are possible at peak times. Bring valid photo identification and check any admission charge or event conditions in advance.

CC Blooms has changed with the city, and its 2025 makeover gave the old queen a noticeably fresher wardrobe. Yet its essential role remains the same: a visible LGBTQ+ meeting place where travelers can eat, drink, flirt, dance and discover a slice of Edinburgh’s queer history. Check its official social media for current opening times, performances and club nights before heading over.
