I first visited gay New York expecting the Village and found Hell's Kitchen - which is exactly right, because gay New York does not stay where you left it. The West Village and Christopher Street remain historically significant - the Stonewall Inn is a national monument, and the streets where the 1969 uprising happened still carry weight - but the active scene has moved north to Hell's Kitchen along 9th Avenue and 10th Avenue in the 40s and 50s, where a dense concentration of bars, clubs and community spaces has built something new without forgetting what came before. Gay New York is also too large and too diverse to be one thing: there are scenes within scenes - the Chelsea bear bars, the Brooklyn queer spaces, the Jackson Heights Latin LGBTQ+ community in Queens, the long-running clubs that anchor the nightlife circuit. The city legalised same-sex marriage in 2011 before federal recognition, and New York Pride - the Stonewall anniversary parade - is one of the most politically charged Pride events in the world. 🏳️‍🌈 New York was where the modern gay rights movement began - the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street, the 1969 uprising, the decades of activism that followed - and that history is not merely commemorated here but actively lived in the way the city's LGBTQ+ community organises and understands itself. Stonewall: where Pride began

The Stonewall Inn at 53 Christopher Street, Greenwich Village, is where the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement began. On June 28, 1969, patrons of the bar - a mixed group of gay men, lesbians, drag queens and transgender women - resisted police harassment in a series of spontaneous uprisings that lasted several nights. The Stonewall Riots are the founding moment of Pride as a global movement: every Pride parade in every city in the world traces its origin here. The Inn is still a working bar and a federally designated national monument. The annual New York Pride march follows Christopher Street on its route, passing the Stonewall Inn each June in a procession that has run without interruption since 1970.
