The Reveal
The Tatami Shack is a renovated stand-alone cabin with its own screened-in lanai overlooking a beautiful coffee and fruit orchard on an isolated farm in the South Kona Coffee belt. The renovated bathroom, in its own shack steps away from the room, features both indoor and outdoor showers. Fresh farm fruits, coffee, eggs, and breads are provided for breakfast.

The farm is located about a 5 minute drive or 20 minute walk from the center of Captain Cook, featuring groceries, a farmerʻs market, and a number of fine restaurants -- serving Local, Thai, Chinese, and Mexican food, healthy wrap sandwiches, pizza and more. We are close to the head of the of the trail that leads down to Kealakekua Bay and the Captain Cook Monument, which has the some of the best views and snorkeling on the island. There are other great attractions nearby, including museums and a botanical garden. Gay life is mostly to be found about 30 minutes away in downtown Kailua-Kona (there are two gay bars -- MyBar, which features a large dance floor, outdoor terrace, great DJ nights, karaoke, burlesque comedy nights, and other events, and the Mask-querade Bar, which has karaoke and games -- as well as a number of gay-owned restaurants).

You are welcome to enjoy all the outdoor spaces on the farm. Because this is a somewhat wild natural environment, we request that you always wear shoes or slippahs outdoors, but remove them when you enter the Tatami Shack and the Bathroom Shack. There is also a yoga/exercise/massage space on the farm which guests are welcome to use. Smoking is allowed except in rooms.

The experience at Lou's and Tony's Kaawaloa Trail Farm was just amazing! After finding my way uphill through a narrow private road through the forest, I slept in a beautifully designed little cabin just outside their house with my own little patio, a big tatami bed with lots of blankets (it got a bit chilly in November) and a little kitchenette, which had a few foods available as well as tea and some of their own coffee. While the two hosts were mainly working on the farm or downhill in the town, they were outstandingly accommodating! Definitely don't miss out on the breakfast with all the amazing freshly-harvested fruits such as custard apple and passion fruit! Total recommendation!

This was my second stay with Lou and Tony. They are both wonderful hosts and the place is perfect to unwind with all of the sounds of nature. At 2000 feet or so, it can get a little chilly in the evenings, but the weighted blankets are like a cocoon. The breakfasts are fabulous. It's difficult to eat storebought produce! It was harvest season during my stay and there were farm volunteers through the world organization of organic farming. It is also difficult to drink commercially farmed coffee after having their coffee during my stay. I really appreciate the care of the land and the labor they put into the coffee. I'm glad I was able to book again and hope to return!

I really enjoyed my stay at the coffee farm. Lou and Tony were very kind and exceptionally generous hosts. The farm is a wonderful place to relax and decompress. The tatami shack is rustic-chic. Their coffee is excellent and nearly everything they serve at breakfast is grown on the farm. I hope to return soon.

There really isn't enough of a word count to do justice for both this amazing place, as well as Tony and Lou themselves. The property is lush and stunning with gorgeous plants and trees. The "shack" itself is super cute and cleverly arranged. The outdoor shower is so cool (and even a bit sexy). Learning about their farm and the coffee process was really interesting. And the hospitality of Lou and Tony is above and beyond. They make breakfast that is better than anything you'd get at a resort, including fresh cut fruits we've never had before. This whole thing is less of a place to stay, and more of a place to experience. We can't wait to come back!
