I have been to Pride in Spain more times than I can count, and what strikes me every time is the sheer variety. Madrid Orgullo is grand and political - 1.5 million people on Alcala, the Calle de Alcala as a river of rainbow flags, and a party in Chueca that runs until Tuesday. Sitges is intimate and hedonistic - the whole town becomes LGBTQ+ for a week, the sea is right there, and the Carrer del Peccat lives up to its name. Barcelona has the style and energy of the Gayxample. And then there's Maspalomas in May - Europe's premier gay beach Pride, in Gran Canaria, where the Yumbo Centrum never closes. misterb&b data shows +133% booking surge in both Barcelona and Sitges during Pride - the highest in all of Europe. Spain is the most LGBTQ+-friendly large country in the world for Pride travel. This is your complete guide to Gay Pride in Spain 2026. 🏳️🌈

Ibiza Pride guide →Spain's Gay Pride history - from 1977 to the world's most welcoming nation
The first Gay Pride march in Spain took place in Barcelona in 1977, under Franco's shadow and just two years after his death - one of the most politically charged Pride marches in history. A decade later, Madrid began its march along Alcala, which would eventually grow into one of the world's largest Pride events. In 2005, Spain became only the third country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage - under the Socialist government of Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, against fierce opposition from the Catholic Church. The law passed with a 187-147 vote in the Congreso de los Diputados, and Spain has been a benchmark for LGBTQ+ rights in Southern Europe ever since.
Madrid hosted WorldPride in 2017 - the first time the global LGBTQ+ event came to Southern Europe - with an estimated 3.5 million people over the week. Sitges has been a gay resort town since the 1950s, when a small community of artists and intellectuals established it as a space of freedom outside Franco's repression. Torremolinos and Maspalomas built their gay tourism industries in the 1970s and 1980s, when British and northern European gay men discovered the warm, affordable and increasingly open Andalusian coast. Today, Spain's LGBTQ+ scene is one of the richest and most diverse in Europe.
