I keep being surprised by Nantes in the best possible way. It is a city that has remade itself - the old industrial shipyards on the Ile de Nantes are now home to art installations, bars, and a creative community that has changed the demographic profile of the city over the past twenty years. The LGBTQ+ scene here has grown with that transformation: younger, more politically engaged than the traditional bar scene, with a strong network of associations and community spaces centred around the Bouffay neighbourhood. There is a gay pride in Nantes every summer, and the city turns out for it in a way that reflects genuine local support rather than just tolerance. The annual Machines de l'Ile exhibition and the extraordinary street art of the city give Nantes a creative atmosphere that shapes the whole social environment. What I find most compelling is the combination of old city charm - the Passage Pommeraye, the castle of the Dukes of Brittany - with this newer creative energy.
