I have walked Mount Vernon at every hour and in every season, and I keep coming back because this neighborhood does something that very few gay districts in the world manage: it is genuinely historical and genuinely alive at the same time. Mount Vernon, Baltimore's gay district, is not a preserved museum of queer history - it is a working neighborhood where that history is still being lived. The Washington Monument at the center of Mount Vernon Place is the same monument at whose feet Baltimore held its first Pride rally in 1975. Leon's of Baltimore on Park Avenue has been serving the gay community since 1957. The Pride Center of Maryland, established in this neighborhood in 1977, still operates here. These are not heritage plaques - these are open doors. Mount Vernon sits immediately north of downtown Baltimore, bounded by Eager Street, the Jones Falls Expressway, Franklin Street, and Eutaw Street. It is a National Historic Landmark district with 19th-century architecture - stately rowhouses, neoclassical institutions, and four park squares radiating from the central monument - that gives it an atmosphere unlike any other American gay district.
