Australia's Melbourne is a free-spirited and laidback destination. The gay season culminates in the Midsumma Festival held in January, but it's not the only attraction in this incredible, LGBT-friendly haven. Matthew is one of our hosts there and he shares his Local Tips to make the best of this city, the birthplace of Kylie Minogue. :) Get lost and explore Melbourne: if you want to stay like a gay local, misterb&b has got your back!
What’s the gay scene like in Melbourne?
Melbourne is laid-back and really gay-friendly, with a particular hub of activity focused on the North side inner-city suburbs of Collingwood and Fitzroy. There's also a second area, south of the Yarra River, in Prahran and Windsor. You see gay couples walking hand-in-hand quite comfortably in these areas.

Cool! And what are the best gay events that take place there?
Midsumma, which takes place in January, is the key gay festival, and comprises both the Pride March and the popular Midsumma Carnival. The Melbourne Queer Film Festival, in March, is also an annual highlight.

We only have 48 hours in Melbourne. What can’t we miss?
Some might head for the National Gallery of Victoria, Federation Square, and the Melbourne Museum, all worthy sights. Personally, I’d explore the city laneways, with hidden bars and cafés, and some of the best food in Australia.
Can you recommend a gay place for brunch on weekends?
Gay-owned SoJo on Stanley Street is a neighbourhood fave.

And the best gay place for a cheap beer or happy hour?
The Railway Hotel in Windsor has a popular gay happy hour on Sunday afternoons. In the North, anywhere along Smith Street in Collingwood/Fitzroy will be welcoming and full of happy locals. Give Mollie’s a try in the evening.
We’re ready to party! What are the best gay clubs?
Sircuit, the Peel and the Laird Hotel (all near my house!) are the long-standing clubs. Also check out Poof Doof, the Closet parties and The Gasometer Queer Party.

Are there any places related to LGBT-history we should see?
During the Midsumma festival, the Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives lead a gay history walk, focusing on different areas of Melbourne.
Can you share a secret or little-known place for misterb&b travelers to check out?
If I share my secret and little-known gems in Melbourne, no one will have a reason to come stay with me! :) So take this as an invitation!
Any beaches or parks to chill-out in?
Edinburgh Gardens in North Fitzroy attracts a lively picnicking crowd on sunny afternoons. Pack an cooler and relax in the sunshine. There are tonnes of beaches in Melbourne, some of the best are St. Kilda and Brighton.

Finally, where can we get the best view of Melbourne?
The observation deck of Eureka Tower is popular with tourists, but I reckon locals prefer the view from the top of the Shrine of Remembrance, which offers the city as an excellent backdrop for your photos.
