Gay Local Tips in San Diego

Sun in San Diego

It may initially come as a surprise, but San Diego is one of the most gay-friendly places in the US. It's also where misterb&b host, Dominic, calls home. From bottomless mimosas to Sunday afternoon debauchery, he shares his insider tips on how to best experience this sunny gay city.

How gay-friendly is your city? What’s gay life like there?

San Diego has got to be one of the most gay-friendly places in the US. We have a great gay neighborhood called Hillcrest with a ton of gay bars and events. Feel free to hold hands and kiss in public - I have never felt out of place in San Diego for who I am!

What are the best gay events that take place in your city each year?

Gay Pride and CityFest are two of the biggest. Our Gay Pride brings people from all over the country, and a huge portion of Balboa Park is dedicated to the event. University Avenue gets closed down for the parade - and what a parade it is! CityFest is a neighborhood celebration for Hillcrest and it truly is a Gay Extravaganza. It is mostly for locals, but of course everyone is free to join in.

We only have 48 hours in your city. What can’t we miss?

Without question, Blacks Beach is the most iconic gay experience in San Diego. It is a large nude beach, and on any given weekend sunny summer day, you will find the beach loaded with all types of men in the buff. But the beauty doesn’t stop with the men, this beach is both private and gorgeous, and sits at the foot of towering cliffs. Bring your hiking boots! The San Diego Zoo is pretty amazing. Even if you don’t think you like zoos, this one may surprise you.

A night in Gay Hillcrest is a must! Don't expect to keep your gay status if you don't make it to The Hole on a Sunday afternoon. Popular with locals, you can expect drinks and debauchery here, while listening to classic rock anthems.

Your favorite gay place to grab a bite for lunch? A nice dinner?

Mo’s is always a party waiting to happen. At lunch time, it’s a bit quieter and outdoor seating is a must in sunny San Diego. Uptown Tavern is an excellent dinner spot with a hip atmosphere. You won’t look out of place if you dress up a bit here.

A gay place for brunch on weekends?

There are plenty of gay places for brunch on weekends. My favorites are those that have bottomless Mimosas and all-you-can-eat buffets. Mo’s and Baja Betty’s are good options for this. I also enjoy Pardon My French, which offers a nice outdoor patio. While there is no buffet here, it has some yummy breakfast menu items and good mimosas.

Best gay place and day for a cheap beer or happy hour

Gossip Grill has $4 beer and wines on Wednesdays and two-for-one drinks every weekday for happy hour. This is considered a ‘girl’s bar’, but all are welcome as long as you’re respectful. It has a great vibe.

We’re ready to party! What are the best gay clubs?

There is a monthly ‘Bear Party’ at the Merrow and DILF parties at The Rail two or three times a month. Of course, Rich’s is always a popular choice for men and women - you should expect a younger crowd here.

What are the best alternative gay bars and clubs where you live?

Pec’s is a very unpretentious dive bar, catering to Bears and all types. San Diego also has its own Eagle for the Leather Crowd.

Are there any places related to LGBT history?

The LGBT Center lies in the heart of Hillcrest and is a great place to visit. Here you will be able to brush up on the gay history of San Diego.

Can you share a secret or little-known place to visit in your city?

I wouldn’t call Blacks Beach a secret, but it does not have any signs to and it is hard to get to. The Hole in Point Loma on Sundays is off the beaten path and is a local hotspot. Additionally, unknown to many is Friday happy hour at Top of the Bay. Enjoy cocktails while watching the sunset over the ocean with a no-attitude gay crowd.

Any beaches, parks or best other places to chill out?

I love Ocean Beach. It’s not a gay beach but it is chill and non-judgemental. The pier is a great place to go for a stroll, and Dog’s Beach is a fun place to watch dogs and their owners. Grab a cold draft and fish tacos at South Beach Bar and Grill, which overlooks the pier.

Where you can we get the best view of San Diego?

Cabrillo National Monument is a beautiful lookout overlooking Coronado and downtown San Diego.
