The Reveal

Relax on the front porch and set a spell. Enjoy a stay in an 1890s Farmhouse. Originally built as a "honeymoon" suite, this little unit boasts a full bath, kitchenette with mini fridge, coffee service and a safe. Just a stone's throw from a diner, really good fried chicken and a medical clinic should the need arise. Bring your bike because the 44-mile rails to trails Longleaf Trace backs up to the property. One can ride your bike to the lake and fish or picnic. There's a decent gym in town, an Equestrian trail and an old crumbling mansion to check out. Step back in time at the AF Carraway Store in town and you will see why Bassfield is the Heart of the Longleaf Trace and Jeff Davis County is the "Garden Spot of The Earth". Y'all come now, Ya hear!

Nearby Attractions

The Longleaf Trace is a 44-mile rails to trails running from Main Street in Prentiss, 12 miles North to the AMTRAK Station in downtown Hattiesburg 32 miles South. This house was the home of the man who came up with the idea to turn the abandoned rail line into what is now the Longleaf Trace.

AF Carraway Store has been in operation for over 100 years now. It hasn't changed too much since then. If you can't find it anywhere else, you can find it at Carraways. Sitting on the main street of Bassfield next to the bank.

The Faler Mansion is an architectural anomaly. It's identical on all four sides. In its day, it was a glorious site. Today, though a remnant of its former self, the mansion holds great potential and promise. Look but don't touch. It's privately owned. If you take pictures, use the hashtag #savethefalermansion

Faler Park is just down the trace from The Trace House. There's a gazebo and big ol' trees to relax under if you need a bathroom break. City Hall is right next door. The girls at city hall can answer any questions you might have about the town.

Jeff Davis Lake is at the end of a mile long contrail off the main trace nearly 10 miles north of The Trace House. It offers a full service campground, state prize winning fishing and picnic areas. The Lake Manager can answer any questions you might have.

The Prentiss Institute campus is near the head of the trace in Prentiss. This HBCU junior college is on a resurrection & revitalization path currently. There are several buildings in great repair, several that are still being used for meetings including a very well restored Rosenwald School! Museum tours by appointment.

Host recommendations

The Trace House does not allow indoor smoking. Not just because you would incur a $250 cleaning fee, but because this old house is almost 125 years old and is built out of virgin timber. Believe me, the porch is where you are going to want to sit and smoke anyway--everybody says so. On that note, The Trace House does not allow any open flames inside the house. No candles please. Unfortunately, the Trace House does not allow pets at this time. There were issues. Now there are rules. So sorry. This room has a maximum occupancy of 2 people. That's it. Though it may look like a great place to throw a party. Make sure it's a party of just the two people who booked the stay. The rule that everyone must follow here is the Golden Rule. If ever you are in doubt. Remember the Golden Rule and live by that.
