Croix Rousse is located to the north of the Presqu'île (12-minute walk or 5-minute metro ride from the apartment). From Terreaux or Opéra, you can walk straight up to "les pentes". The Croix Rousse plateau has a very pleasant village atmosphere.

This is the neighborhood where the silk workers or "canuts" once lived and worked, Lyon being the capital of silk. A working-class district, it was poor and ill-famed for a long time. But that's all changed now! It's on the slopes that you'll find many of Lyon's authentic bouchons. And yes, the bouchons' first customers were the canuts, who came to the Mères Lyonnaises to satiate themselves with home-style cooking. It's because of this working-class past that the Croix Rousse hill is called "the hill that works", as opposed to Fourvière "the hill that prays".
