On the night of June 27-28, 1969, patrons of the Stonewall Inn - a working-class gay bar at 53 Christopher Street in New York City's West Village - fought back against a routine police raid. Over the following days, spontaneous protests spread through Greenwich Village. One year later, on June 28, 1970, the Christopher Street Liberation Day March walked from Greenwich Village to Central Park - the first Pride march in the world. The march has taken place in New York every year since - through the AIDS crisis of the 1980s, through the marriage equality campaigns of the 2000s, through the Supreme Court ruling of 2015, and the continued fight for LGBTQ+ rights today. In 2019, on the 50th anniversary of Stonewall, New York hosted WorldPride with an estimated five million people across the weekend - the largest Pride gathering in history.
