Gay Local Tips in Madrid

To Chueca or not to Chueca - that's actually out of the question

Norbey is our proud host from Madrid. Aside from visiting Chueca and the highlights of the capital, you'll be able to discover more thanks to his knowledge of the city: hidden corners, cute Asian restaurants, and the most amazing rooftops to enjoy a view of Madrid. Explore the world, experience your pride.

How gay-friendly is your city? What’s gay life like there?

Madrid is a very open city. There’s no struggle between communities, as is for the rest of Spain too - same-sex marriage is legal here. On top of this, Madrid's gay area of Chueca is internationally recognized for its diversity and friendly vibe, and fortunately Chueca is exactly where my apartment is located.

What are the best gay events that take place in your city each year?

The best time to be in Madrid is summer, particularly between June and July when gay pride celebrations happen. Pride in Madrid is definitely one of the most important in the world and every year we welcome at least 1 million visitors - people from Spain and the whole world swarm to Madrid each year for pride. That's how big it is!

We only have 48 hours in your city. What can’t we miss?

You should definitely find time to explore both Chueca and Malasaña - they’re a staple for the gay community on both a local and global level. You should also visit Palacio Real, Parque el Retiro Prado museum and of course take a stroll on the Gran Via.

What’s your favorite gay place to grab a bite for lunch? A nice dinner?

I love Asian restaurants, and you can find tons of them in Calle San Marcos in the heart of Chueca. If you’re into this type of cuisine, simply take a walk there and pick a restaurant to your liking - I swear they’re all very very good.

A gay place for brunch on weekends?

You should definitely go at least once to the picturesque rooftop of the Hotel Oscar - it’s a gay friendly hotel that is very popular amongst tourists and the local gay community. Go there for cocktails and pre-drinks, you won't regret it.

Best gay place and day for a cheap beer or happy hour?

You could try Bar Reina in Plaza de Pedro Zerolo. That’s another popular gay spot, and it has a range of different drinks to choose from.

We’re ready to party! What are the best gay clubs?

WE Party is one of the most anticipated gay events every year, and there are different parties all year round. There’s a big one coming up this winter on Dec 31st. The most significant parties usually run on NYE and during Madrid Pride.

What are the best alternative gay bars and clubs where you live?

There’s quite a few: Boyberry, Terraza Reina and The Myst.

Are there any places related to LGBTQ history?

There’s no particular spot, but there’s a very important square called Pedro Zerolo - he was a pioneer who fought for and promoted gay marriage. All Spain owes him some of the rights we can claim today as gay men, and that’s why this place carries his name. It’s about acknowledgement of our rights, and about the people who fought for those who will follow.

Where can we get the best view of Madrid?

Along Gran Via you have several rooftop bars where you can admire the beauty of the city without leaving the center. The Corte Inglés rooftop is a perfect example, and it is definitely one of the most popular. But you can pick from many, they’re all worth a visit.
