LGBTQ+ Scholarships & Grants for Studying Abroad: How to Fund Your Global Education

Ask any student, and they’ll tell you that studying abroad was a magical experience, offering students the chance to immerse themselves in new cultures, expand their academic perspectives, and build international networks. However, for LGBTQ+ students, studying abroad can come with financial and safety barriers. The good news is that there are scholarships, grants, and resources specifically designed to help LGBTQ+ students access and afford international education.

Many students face higher financial obstacles, often due to a lack of familial support, and they also may have safety concerns when traveling to countries with anti-LGBTQ+ laws and limited access to culturally competent study-abroad programs. Scholarships explicitly designed for LGBTQ+ students help bridge these gaps, ensuring more students can take advantage of global learning opportunities.

One of the most well-known and generous scholarships is the Rainbow Scholarship, offered by the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA). This scholarship provides up to $10,000 to LGBTQ+ students with financial need, helping them cover tuition, travel, and living expenses abroad. The Point Foundation Scholarship, the largest LGBTQ+ scholarship fund in the U.S., supports LGBTQ+ students with tuition assistance, mentorship, and leadership development opportunities. Other notable scholarships include the League Foundation LGBTQ+ Scholarship, which awards between $2,500 and $5,000, and the Gilman-McCain Scholarship, which provides $5,000 to LGBTQ+ students dependent on active U.S. military members.

For transgender students, financial aid can be even harder to find, but programs like the Transgender First Scholarship offer dedicated funding of $2,500 to support trans students pursuing higher education. These scholarships not only alleviate financial burdens but also create a support network for LGBTQ+ students navigating academia and travel.

Beyond scholarships, specific study abroad programs are particularly inclusive of LGBTQ+ students. CIEE’s LGBTQ+ Safe Abroad Initiative provides financial aid and LGBTQ+ safety training, ensuring students are well-prepared for their travels. IES Abroad offers LGBTQ+ and ally-specific scholarships for programs in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. SIT Study Abroad focuses on social justice and human rights, making it an ideal choice for LGBTQ+ students interested in activism. Additionally, API Study Abroad provides mental health resources and financial aid tailored to LGBTQ+ students traveling to diverse regions.

Applying for LGBTQ+ scholarships and grants can be competitive, so crafting a strong application is crucial. A compelling personal statement is essential, and students should highlight why studying abroad is vital to their identity and how they plan to use the experience to give back to the LGBTQ+ community. Applying for multiple scholarships increases the chances of securing funding, and looking into lesser-known scholarships can be a strategic advantage, as they often receive fewer applications.

LGBTQ+ students should also be aware of safety resources available while studying abroad. Websites like Equaldex and ILGA World track LGBTQ+ laws and rights by country, helping students make informed decisions about their destinations. misterb&b provides safe accommodations, while advocacy groups like OutRight International and The Trevor Project offer support services for LGBTQ+ travelers.

Studying abroad should be an opportunity open to everyone, and LGBTQ+ students deserve the financial and structural support needed to make it happen. By applying for scholarships, choosing LGBTQ+-inclusive study abroad programs, and researching safety tips in advance, students can turn their dream of international education into reality. It’s more than just traveling; it’s about building global connections, advocating for inclusivity, and empowering yourself in new ways. With the right resources, LGBTQ+ students can make the most of their time abroad while staying safe and supported.
