The Dordogne valley The Dordogne valley stretches from Carlux to Siorac-en-Périgord. It's a valley of unspoilt natural beauty, boasting a number of major heritage sites: the villages of Beynac (and its château), La Roque-Gageac and Domme, all listed as among the most beautiful villages in France, as well as Castelnaud, the Jardins de Marqueyssac and many others. The valley's natural setting makes it ideal for relaxation and a wide range of leisure activities: canoeing, swimming, walking...
The Vézère valley The Vézère valley is famous for its many prehistoric sites, classified as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. These include the Lascaux cave, Font-de-Gaume and Cap-Blanc. The town of Les Eyzies can rightly claim to be the world capital of prehistory, thanks to the large number of sites it houses, its national museum and its interpretation center. A little less touristy than the Dordogne valley, the Vézère valley offers peace and quiet. It's ideal for family outings, walks and sporting activities (mountain biking). Like the rest of Périgord, it boasts an exceptional terroir and remarkably well-preserved heritage sites: Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère (listed as one of France's most beautiful villages), Montignac, the fortified house of Reignac, La Roque Saint-Christophe and Château de Losse.
Sarlat, a city of art, history and gastronomy The town of Sarlat is undoubtedly one of the must-see places in Périgord. It's an admirably preserved and restored medieval town. Sarlat is a lively town, thanks to its market, guided tours and festivals. In winter, there are three major events: the Christmas market, the truffle festival in January and the goose festival in February. To visit Sarlat is to awaken all your senses - especially your sense of taste. The nose and palate are constantly in demand: here a farmer's market, there a visit to a truffle farm, further afield a tasting of foie gras or a local specialty. Not to mention the many gourmet events the town regularly organizes! In short, you'll see that everything here is a matter of taste. Nature has generously endowed the Périgord with truffles, ceps, chestnuts, walnuts, foie gras, strawberries, cabécou, wines, confits, enchauds...
