Ipanema's gay beach - the stretch between posto 8 and posto 9 - is one of the most social LGBTQ+ spaces in the world, operating seven days a week, year-round, in a city where the beach is genuinely the living room. Gay Rio de Janeiro extends beyond the beach into the bars and clubs of Ipanema and the adjacent Copacabana, but the beach anchors everything. The Carnival in February - when gay street parties (blocos) operate throughout the city's neighbourhoods - is an extraordinary experience that has no real equivalent anywhere. Brazil legalised same-sex marriage in 2013 and Rio's gay community operates within a legal framework that is relatively progressive compared to its Brazilian peers, though urban security requires awareness as in any large Latin American city. The combination of spectacular geography, extraordinary music and street culture, and a beach-centred gay scene makes gay Rio genuinely unlike anywhere else. 🏳️‍🌈 The LGBTQ+ presence at Ipanema is centred on the stretch of beach between Posto 8 and Posto 9, known as the 'rainbow flag beach', which has been a gathering point for decades and remains one of the most beautiful gay beach spaces in the world. Rio Pride in September-October has been growing and now draws very large crowds through the Copacabana beachfront. What I find most honest to say about gay Rio is that the experience here is inseparable from the physical environment: the mountains, the beaches, the bays, the Christ the Redeemer statue visible from half the city - this is a setting of exceptional beauty that shapes even a routine Tuesday. The favela culture and the city's significant economic inequality are also part of the context that honest gay travel writing should acknowledge. "Friday starts at Posto9 in Ipanema, still Rio's classic gay beach spot for people watching with a caipirinha. Then sunset in Arpoador, cocktails at gay bar Silêncio, before ending up at Pink Flamingo or somewhere chaotic in Lapa. Saturday is beach all day: Ipanema, Copacabana, Leme, Barra or Prainha if you want something quieter. Sunset beers at Mureta da Urca, dinner with friends, then out again. Sunday starts at Feira da Glória, explore the city during the day, and ends at Sambay for samba."

On Saturday, I wake up to bike along the boardwalk between Leblon and Arpoador, spend the afternoon at the beach and end the night at some club. Sunday is slower: beach again, sunset in Ipanema and, afterwards, a stop by the Sauna to close out the weekend."
