Gay Local Tips in Brighton and Hove

Piers and Queers

Jason fell in love with Brighton the first time he visited it over 20 years ago. As a Fabul'host on misterb&b, he enjoys sharing his knowledge of the city with gay travelers from all over the globe. Find out why Jason decided to make Brighton his home, and discover where to eat, drink and dance yourself silly. Explore Brighton, experience your pride.

How gay-friendly is your city? What’s gay life like there?

Brighton and Hove are arguably the most gay-friendly cities in the whole of the UK... gay culture extends beyond the bars and clubs of Kemptown into many different aspects of everyday life. Inclusivity and public acceptance have never been greater than today.

What are the best gay events that take place in your city each year?

The world-famous Brighton Pride takes place every year over the first weekend of August and remains a summer highlight for everyone in the city. The Brighton Festival in May hosts many gay-themed performances, including eveyrthing from The Ladyboys of Bangkok to experimental theatre.

We only have 48 hours in your city. What can’t we miss?

First on my list would be heading straight to the beach, so you can soak up some local culture and take in the sea air. Along with this, I would also suggest visiting The Brighton Pavilion, shopping in The Lanes quarter, and of course visiting the bars and clubs of gay-area, Kemptown.

What’s your favorite gay place to grab a bite for lunch? A nice dinner?

Being on the coast, Brighton and Hove boast some of the UK's best seafood. If fresh seafood is your thing, don't miss Riddle and Finns in the South Lanes...the perfect place for fresh crab legs and a glass of bubbly! If you're vegetarian, you can't miss Terre à Terre, which has been a local favorite for decades. My favorite curry in town has to be at the brilliant Hove Tandoori, which provides a cozy atmosphere along with fantastic authentic flavours.

A gay place for brunch on weekends?

Modelo Lounge is the quintessential brunch spot in Hove, as well as the newer, more modern vibe found at Hixson Green. When in Brighton, check out Carluccios in North Laine for reliable breakfasts, or try the lavish spread offered at the tea rooms in The Grand Hotel.

Best gay place and day for a cheap beer or happy hour?

There are endless drink specials and happy hours on offer in Brighton's gayest neighborhood, Kemptown. Try the refreshingly funky Dr. Brighton's pub and the excellent bar food and Sunday roasts at the Camelford Inn. If you want something a bit darker, head into the dark cavernous Bulldog, which is the oldest gay bar in town and offers super cheap drinks and a lively crowd.

We’re ready to party! What are the best gay clubs?

If you're under 30 (or still act like it) head to Club Revenge directly across from the Palace Pier for the latest pop music and occasional hen party. Alternatively, if you don't mind partying with a mixed-aged crowd, don't miss the Basement Club at Legends...expect commercial dance music and a very 'up for it' crowd! Those after some after-hours cruising should head to Subline, Brighton's male-only cruise bar.

What are the best alternative gay bars and clubs where you live?

I love Dr. Brighton's in the South Lanes for its quirky pub atmosphere and super friendly staff... and don't miss the amazing banter and special events at Don't Tell Mama, Brighton's coolest gay private members club. DTM offers 'one time' passes for open events on Friday and Saturday nights for visitors to Brighton... but go early as they often sell out!

Are there any places related to LGBT history?

Brighton and Hove have been known as gay and lesbian destinations since the 1930s, offering liberal values and a 'live and let live' attitude towards sexuality. Check out the walking tour of gay Brighton 'Piers and Queers' for an informative look at Brighton's LGBT history.

Can you share a secret or little-known place to visit in your city?

Many people don't realize Brighton has a naturist beach, right in the city center! South of Kemptown, look for the signs pointing you towards the naturist beach, very close to the Brighton marina. For a quiet and shady picnic in the center of Hove, don't miss the charming St. Anne's Well Garden, which despite its diminutive size, boasts plenty of old trees, gorgeous gardens, and great play spaces for kids.

Any beaches, parks or best other places to chill-out?

All of the beaches in Brighton and Hove are open to the public and make for great lounging by the sea. The entire seafront is lined with fabulous bars, cafes, and casual restaurants to enjoy. The cities' best parks include the gigantic Preston Park, the home of Brighton Pride, and the leafy residential Hove Park. ●
