The Reveal

**Dock removed for the winter**

(Desire more photos? Plz inquire!) Awaken to bird-song, rooster crows & hungry whinnies. Stretch & take in the lake view. Grab a coffee, meditate on the dock in your PJs face to the sun & wind-chimes in the breeze. Pat a soft horse-muzzle on your way back up. Plan your afternoon adventure - take a swim, kayak or fishing ? After host-cooked dinner, have a drink at the fire. Raining? Do game night, karaoke or sauna. Sip wine at the balcony bar & watch the storm. Before bed, take a book & wine into a bubble bath by the fire. Repeat.

The Shackteau has everything you need for a relaxing vacation: Music making, meditation space, home gym, boats, swimming, friendly animals, hammocks, sauna, fireplaces indoors and out, luxurious bath, and lots of extra fee-for-service offerings, including private home-cooking.

Reduced rate in exchange for overlooking some "aesthetic immaturity" thanks to covid-related dearth of trades-people. Painting is behind schedule, so art & bedroom TVs not yet hung, a bit of furniture ordered in Feb. still not arrived. An undelivered couch is preventing the installation of a french door at top of stairs. None of this should seriously impact your vacation.

SLEEPING In summer (June 1 - Sept. 30) the property is ideal for 2 couples plus a few friends or kids. As long as one couple doesn't mind the Glamping Tent. (It's very nice!)

In winter, (Oct 1 - May 30) the property is ideal for EITHER 2 couples plus a bunch of adult friends who don't mind airbeds (as long as one couple doesn't mind the low-ceilinged attic room. OR for 2 couples and a bunch of kids. (Attic will be locked for parties with children.)

1) Master sleeps 2 in king bed. 2-sided gas fireplace in wall shared w/ bath 2) Meditation-suite BR sleeps 2 on queen bed 3) The meditation-suite kitchenette sleeps 2 on air-beds (tight) 4) Music room sleeps 2 on loveseats w/ single pull-outs, memory foam mattresses, in beautifully finished basement w/ a bit of natural light from french door 5) Attic - sleeps 2 (Not living space, 5'5" peaked ceiling.) 2 air-beds until couch delivery. Accessed from a pull-down ladder w/ handrail (375 lb capacity) in kitchenette. Has railing around opening & latched gate at the top. Fans and 3 small latticed windows (no glass) are cut into the lower portion of one wall overlooking the great room, for natural light and ventilation.

GREAT ROOM Made for gathering. 360 fireplace, games, art supplies, library, wi-fi projector (use our apps or your log into your own), 100" viewing screen, conversation nook, 14-seater table. G.o.o.g.l.e. home speakers in all rooms, & wi-fi.

Kids? Swim, stamp eggs with our special logo. Groom & feed horses, chickens & cats. Fill bird-feeders. There is always something to shovel. Join horses for their bedtime story - Winnie the Pooh. Art supplies, lawn games & outdoor ping-pong.

The Shackteau is named for the concept of a grand gathering space with fabulous food and wine, nestled into rustic Maine charm. We are your hosts, Laura & Steve Bowden. We are a straight couple with many friends and family in the LGBTQ+BIPOC community. As with so many of us, the pandemic inspired us to transform "things we want to do someday" into "things we will do right now." Because life is short. We both spent over 20 years in corporate America before semi-retiring. With The Shackteau, we are laying the foundation for a post-retirement career more aligned with our values and interests - and hopefully putting some good into the world while we’re at it! In 2017 we purchased 6 acres on a lake in Maine with the idea of turning it into a family camp. We thought “someday” we might run a hospitality business which would allow us to retire with a different kind of lifestyle: Hosting in the warm months and traveling in the cold months. It’s been a rollercoaster getting to this point. Two kids graduated from college. A daughter got married and moved to Freeport area in Maine; we were nearly scammed out of our house budget by an an unscrupulous builder; couldn’t get a new builder for over a year; our pre-covid request to adopt 2 miniature horses came through in the middle of covid and we didn’t have a barn; and of course the Pandemic was a challenge all around. But then an early retirement buy-out from Laura's job in financial services was the icing on the cake. And in the fall of 2021 we sold our historic South Boston home and started our next chapter! We are two people who have loved traveling abroad. Steve was born in France and Laura in Wisconsin, but we have lived in Boston for the majority of our lives. We love food, wine and cycling; animals, nature and holidays (especially Halloween). We love providing hospitality in the form of cooking for the multitudes. Steve makes Cake-Boss-style cakes. We host an annual holiday party where Steve constructs an enormous gingerbread house modeled after famous architecture and everyone we know comes to decorate it. We host an annual 20+ person outdoor sit-down dinner over Indigenous People’s Day weekend. We ran successful 2-unit lodging in Boston (you know the name of that one, but it gets deleted from profiles) and are addicted to sharing stories over wine with complete strangers. We participated in a local non-profit that matches Boston medical patients to free lodging when they could not afford to stay in the Boston area, and a similar non-profit for cross-country cyclists. We like to have fun! The Shackteau is a labor of love. We are here to serve. So hope you're hungry.

Host recommendations

Now the heavy stuff. We know it seems like a lot, but it's a large property with a lot going on. PLEASE READ. - We only accept guests with at least one positive rating on misterbandb or ********. Please don't be offended if we reject your booking based on that policy. - Hosts reserve the right to prohibit a campfire under very dry or very windy conditions. Please be understanding as it's for everyone's safety. - Campfires are great, but never leave yours unattended. If you have plans for later, consider building a smaller fire. You can also request a bucket of sand to put the fire out on short notice - no problem. - No swimming or being loud on the dock after dark - for courtesy to the neighbors. Lake acoustics are weird and amplify everything. - No public nudity in the sauna, on the dock or in the lake. We are a family-friendly camp for all flavors of families. This is not a hookup site. We LOVE having kids as guests and welcome their participation on the farm! - Use caution with the horses. If you assume every horse may kick you and keep your distance from their backside, you will never be kicked. Same goes for biting. MadEye the mini (who is blind in one eye) is fascinated by fabrics that make scratchy noises such as nylon and Gortex and things with velcro. Minis are like toddlers and explore with their mouths, so it is common for him to nibble your coat or pants, misjudge, and get your arm or leg by accident. It's not aggression, but it still hurts! - Never feed the horses unless the host gives you an approved snack. (Yes, we provide approved snacks.) Not apples, carrots, grass or plants. Miniature horses basically diabetic - so sensitive to natural sugars it can cause a fatal condition within a few short hours. (Nobody wants pony-murder as part of their vacation memories right?) - Quiet hours: No amplified music outside after 9pm. But acoustic music & singing by the campfire is always allowed! Top volume in the music room at any hour is fine by us! - No smoking. (Note: There are tons of cannabis stores that sell gummies within a reasonable radius from The Shackteau. Go crazy!) Otherwise, No smoking cigarettes, marijuana, or vaping. Not outdoors, not indoors. Not on the swim raft, not on a boat. Not in your parked car. Not on the road b/c that looks sketchy to the neighbors. Smoke pot as a medical necessity? Then don't stay here. Because there is no smoking. See a host smoking pot? Doesn't matter. You still can't. Evidence of any form of smoking will result in immediate eviction of your stay, a bad review, and no refund of your payment or ********. We ran an ******** in Boston and we are incredibly serious about this rule. - Feel free to drink alcohol anywhere and everywhere, but please use our recycling bins. Proceeds go to The Trevor Project. - No exiting the Shackteau drive to left either on foot or in a car - it's a dead end & the neighbors are sensitive to meandering strangers. - When exiting right DO NOT ENTER THE GOAT FARM except from the paved road. Thank you for your kind attention to these rules. None of them should negatively impact your stay, we promise.
