Iconic Gay Bar in New York about to close

It was just announced on its Facebook page: after 22 years of loyal service, Splash Bar New York will close its doors on August 10. Since 1991, this gay bar has probably been New York’s most famous gay venue, especially with tourists.

Splash Bar opened right in the heart of Chelsea, New York’s gay neighborhood back in the 90s. It quickluy became one of the liveliest venue in town. Both bar and club, Splash Bar was known for its gogo dancers and their on-stage shower performances, a concept that was then imported to Raidd Bar in Paris.

Many pop stars hit the place (such as Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue and Gloria Estefan). It was a place of life, encounters, socializing.

Then came the Internet. And mobile dating applications. Like in many gay districts in the world, gay bars became less attractive. They are not the only place where gays can meet nowadays. Besides, the LGBT visibility has improved.

Splash Bar began to be frequented mainly by tourists, locals preferring newer bars such as Industry, Therapy or G Lounge. Last blow was the recent opening of XL Nightclub, in Hell's Kitchen, the gay neighborhood of the moment.

The owner said it : the closing party will stay in all memories! So if you are in New York this summer, do not miss one of the last 10 nights of Splash Bar, August 1-10. And if not, you can also leave a message on its Memory Wall on its website and share your memories of the place.
