The thing about gay Amsterdam that stays with me is the lightness of it - a city where being gay is so thoroughly unremarkable that the scene has a relaxed confidence you don't find everywhere. The Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage (2001), and Amsterdam has been living that reality since long before the law caught up. The Reguliersdwarsstraat is the main gay street, a short stretch of bars and clubs that fills with a young, international crowd on weekends, while the area around Warmoesstraat near Central Station has the leather and fetish bars that have operated for decades. The Canal Pride in August - when the city's famous canal network fills with decorated boats in a floating parade - is one of the most genuinely joyful LGBTQ+ events I have attended anywhere. And the city's compact, walkable scale means that the gay scene is five minutes from the Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House, the best food markets in northern Europe. 🏳️‍🌈 The Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage, in 2001, and that legal history has shaped a gay community that operates with a confidence and openness that is still, two decades later, not quite replicated anywhere else. Amsterdam Pride in late July-early August - the famous canal parade, with decorated barges moving through the Prinsengracht - is the most distinctive Pride event in the world visually, and the surrounding days of events make the first week of August the peak of the gay calendar here. The city is also genuinely beautiful year-round: the autumn light on the canals, the spring tulip season, the winter Christmas markets. Canal Pride: Amsterdam's floating celebration
