This spacious cottage is located in a Tropical Orchard. Fruit from the Orchard and eggs from the chickens are supplied as well as coffee, tea, honey, and other stables. The cottage sits high over the Orchard to catch the trade winds and provides great views of the Orchard and Jungle. There is one inclosed bedroom and the living room has a futon which makes into a comfortable standard size bed. The full bathroom is across from the bedroom and there is a half bathroom under the cottage. The wifi is in the living room. Please note, being 5 miles away from power lines the cottage is OFF-GRID. Electricity is supplied by solar panels , batteries and a back-up generator. For this reason I can not Allow HAIR DRYERS, IRONS, ELECTERIC COFFEE MAKERS ( I have a french press), or other high wattage plugins. They deplete the batteries. There is plenty of electricity for the full size fridge and other electrical appliances in the cottage. Computers and phone chargers are fine. The back-up generator is far enough away so there is no noise when in use.

There is a clothing optional black sand beach, Kehena beach, 4 miles down the scenic Beach Road. Monday is popular with the local gays. There is gay nude Vollyball every Saturday from 3 until dark at the Banana boys farm ( isle of you) just 4 miles up the road. There are also potlucks and frequent parties as we have no gay bars. Of course there are other attractions, The Volcanos National Park, and the many recent lava flows of May-August 2018, which formed a new black sand beach nearby. Pahoa Village 10 miles away has good restaurants , three filling stations, unique shopping , grocery stores, hardware , banks, and other facilities ... Hilo 30 miles away has everything else, an airport, hospital, sea port, museums, a variety of restaurants,...two starbucks...and all the fast food franchises...There are excellent Farmers Markets nearby. The night market at Uncle Roberts every Wednesday night is not to be missed and is only 7 miles away.
There is no curfew or noise restrictions ( I could not hear you if you screamed). Smoking is not allowed in the cottage but is ok on the lanai and elsewhere on the property. Visitors are fine, but only if you are there with them. No hard drugs. Just be respectful of the cottage as if it were your home.

We stayed at Farmer Bill's place a few years ago and liked it so much we decided to book it again for a short stay. The cottage is separate from the residence and has its own access to the main road and the fresh fruit from the farm was an added and delicious bonus. Good location for the beach, the local coastline attractions, Pahoa and the Volcanos National Park!
Bill was an excellent host! We communicated with him before we arrived and his directions from Hilo to his place were very clear and easy to follow. He had a lot of suggestions for things to do nearby and even gave us a short tour of his farm and some of the more unusual fruit and spice crops growing on the property. The rental property itself is very comfortable and private. Don't let the "off grid" aspect bother you. There is more than enough electricity for hot water, fridge and phone chargers. The stove is a gas stove so also not an issue. We had fresh fruit from the farm each morning which was nice. Highly recommend if you are looking for a quiet place in Puna that is near the coast.
My stay at Farmer Bill's MisterBandB was amazing. He was very communicative before my stay and provided clear directions to his place. The location is off the grid and remote, but still had the amenities needed and WiFi. He was so generous and even invited me to some local gay community events. Bill was a great host and I'd highly recommend staying at his place if you're on the big island!
Bill is a very kind and generous person. The Ohana is as described. It is spacious, near Kahena, but is also remote. The fruit from his property was wonderful and he was attentive to make sure I had what I needed. I hope to be back again!
Super Host, Farmer Bill, sincere, friendly, accommodating, and fresh fruits, and fresh flowers. Master number 22 speaks. And we had a wild spiritual experience. Awesome! The location is wonderful walking distance to the coast. Thank you for providing a home away from home. Blessings, love, and light.
We had such a beautiful, perfect stay at Farmer Bill’s house in the jungle of the Big Island. Communication was clear and so informative as soon as we booked, including info about local events to look forward to. Bill adjusted his schedule to accommodate our trip dates. We were greeted warmly by him upon arrival, and throughout the stay he gave us so many gifts from his garden and home that I can’t list them all. Bill kindly introduced us to many local gay events, mostly held at other people’s homes, and we were able to meet lots of people that way. The house itself is well equipped, comfortable, spacious, and very private. It’s less than 20 mins drive from Pahoa (grocery stores and all essentials, and some remarkably good restaurants and food trucks), 10 mins drive from Kehena black sand/nude beach, and about an hour to the main entrance of Volcanoes National Park. It’s also easy to cook real meals in the full, very well stocked kitchen, and to relax on the lanai, which is protected from even heavy rain, little bursts of which are common in the jungle. The whole time you’re surrounded by Bill’s lush tropical orchards. Bill lives on the property, close enough to help at a moment’s notice and far enough for complete privacy. Even though the house is off-grid, Bill works hard to make sure every comfort is available. The wifi was much faster and more reliable than what we have experienced on the island before (fast enough for good quality video meetings). I can’t say enough good things about this stay. In fact, we enjoyed it so much that I decided to stay an extra week!
Had an awesome time at Bill's place!! And will return, hopefully as soon as possible!! Bill's place is a private, beautiful spot very close to the incredible Puna Red Road, which imo is one the most amazing coast lines anywhere. It is in the country past Pahoa in a wonderful rural location called Opihikao. Lots of big trees, plants, flowers and small farms. Natural beauty everywhere. Many reminders of the lava flows which have shaped the island. Short drive to the magnificent Kehena black sand beach which is a clothes optional gathering spot for the local community, totally including gay folks, and visitors from all over. The house is sturdy, attractive, and very functional with covered lanai (deck). Surrounded by flowers, trees, and Bill's nursery. High ceilings, well furnished in Hawaiian style. Well stocked with useful and/or needed amenities. No problem at all with the solar off grid power. It's a great place for nature lovers and anyone who wants to experience the real Hawaii. Bill himself is a great guy!! Friendly, helpful, and generous with assistance. Knows all the local events, gave us fruit from his orchard, and many helpful suggestions. Just a really outstanding all around human being. Great host. If you are looking for a stay in a place which is not the tourist Hawaii, but an authentic, rural slice of the Big Island, with a vibrant gay community and extraordinary natural beauty-- this is it. Very highly recommended!!
Great isolated location south of Hilo. Host provided fresh eggs, honey and fruit from his own farm. Note the tropical natural surroundings are home to many birds, as many places on the big island. While great for bird lovers, they are quite noisy chirping in the wee hours of the morning - bring ear plugs if you are a sensitive sleeper. (The same holds true all over the big island- even 4 star mega resorts in Kona.)
Farmer Bill went well beyond what was expected from a host. Fresh fruit and eggs throughout our stay. He offered to show us around the area, which he did and it was great having a local take us around to inform us on all the things us tourists would never know or see. if you're worried about being "off grid", don't be! Plenty of power and the WIFI worked great. Thank you Farmer Bill for everything !!
The cottage at Rainbow Orchards is terrific. A large, 1 bedroom with full kitchen, dining area, living room and wide decks. The host has a separate house on this 9-acre tropical fruit farm, far enough away that we never saw it. If you want quiet and privacy, this is perfect. It's a five minute walk to some beautiful beaches. Farmer Bill is a welcoming, knowledgeable but non-intrusive host. He checked in with us regularly to insure our comfort and answer questions about the area, including the gay "scene" (which, because of COVID19 has been greatly curtailed). The Rainbow cottage is "off the grid" but there is excellent wifi coverage and enough electricity for lights, fridge, hot water etc. Bill raises a large variety of tropical fruit trees and is extremely knowledgeable about them specifically and the botany of the Big Island in general. Hopefully, we'll have an opportunity to return before too long.
