In 1968, this village was joined by Port Camargue, Europe's largest yachting harbor with over 4,300 berths. Its beaches are highly reputed. Halfway between Nimes and Montpellier, Sommières, built on the banks of the Vidourle river, reveals its medieval center and Roman bridge. The village comes alive in spring with its medieval festivals (April), and attracts many tourists throughout the summer for its rich and varied crafts. The town boasts a number of gay-friendly establishments, including a cabaret and a wide range of shops. Sommières is located in a wine-growing area, ideal for wine tourism. Sommières is famous for its medieval center, protected by the "secteur sauvegardé", and its medieval festival, as well as its listed château.
