Something has shifted in gay Athens in recent years, and I think it is worth naming: Greece legalised same-sex marriage in 2024, becoming the first Orthodox country to do so, and the Gazi neighbourhood has been the centre of an LGBTQ+ scene that has been building confidence for a decade. When I first visited Gazi - the former industrial gasworks district turned nightlife hub - it felt like a scene asserting itself in difficult circumstances. Now it feels like a scene that has won something, and knows it. The Athens street scene in summer, with the warm evenings and the outdoor bars and the energy that comes from a city where nightlife starts late and ends at dawn, is one of the best in Europe. The food - the mezze culture, the fresh seafood, the tavernas open until 2am - is also central to any honest account of Athens.
