I come to gay Vienna when I want to be surprised by elegance. This is not the obvious choice for a gay city break - Berlin is more radical, Barcelona warmer, Amsterdam more relaxed - but Vienna has something those cities don't: a gay scene embedded in one of the world's great cities of culture, music, and architecture. The Naschmarkt and the surrounding 6th district is the centre, but the gay community spreads through the inner districts in bars and cafes that have operated for decades. Austria legalised same-sex marriage in 2019, and the Rainbow Parade on the Ringstrasse - one of the world's most spectacular ceremonial routes - is an annual demonstration of considerable visibility. The food is magnificent, the coffee houses are UNESCO-listed, the opera and museums are extraordinary. Coming to Vienna as a gay traveler and skipping the Kunsthistorisches Museum or a performance at the Volksoper would be like going to Paris and ignoring the Louvre. 🏳️🌈 Austria legalised same-sex marriage in 2019 following a Constitutional Court ruling, and Vienna has been consistently among the most LGBTQ+ progressive cities in German-speaking Europe. The Naschmarkt area and the 6th and 7th districts around Mariahilfer Strasse have the highest concentration of gay-friendly venues, extending into the 1st district around the Graben on weekend evenings. Vienna Pride - the Regenbogenparade - in June is a major event that draws hundreds of thousands of participants through the Ring boulevard and the city centre. What I find most compelling about gay Vienna is the contrast between the imperial grandeur of the built environment - the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Hofburg, the Opera House - and the progressive, multilingual social culture of the actual city. The coffee house culture, the wine taverns in the Heuriger district, the Danube canal beach in summer: Vienna does daily life very well. "CSD is coming up soon - there's lots going on. Otherwise in summer on weekends to Toten Grund on the Donauinsel."
"In summer, above all check out the nude beach Toter Grund, with food and drinks at Himmel und Wasser. If you want more in the evening, head to Kaiserbründl. Otherwise, enjoy relaxed drinks at Café Savoy or The Hive. Highly recommended are MAK, Albertina, and NHM. Along the Donaukanal, late afternoons are perfect for relaxing and eating. Breakfast at Naschmarkt. Depending on your preferences, take city tours, guided walks, barhopping, or beautiful hikes and strolls through the green forests."
