The thing about gay Munich that consistently surprises visitors is the scale of the sauna circuit - 12 documented venues on misterb&b, more than Amsterdam, more than Madrid, more than most cities in the world. Munich has built an extraordinarily active underground scene alongside the Glockenbachviertel neighbourhood around Hans-Sachs-Strasse and Müllerstrasse, which has been the gay quarter since the 1970s. The city is also the international bear capital - the Oktoberfest-adjacent phenomenon of large German men in Lederhosen is not coincidental with Munich's position in the international bear scene. Bavaria is more conservative than Berlin politically, which gives the gay community here a particular character: more discreet in public, more intense in the established venues. The CSDs in Munich are large and well-attended. The food - Weisswurst at 11am, Brotzeit, the Biergartens in summer - is genuinely excellent and inclusive. 🏳️‍🌈 Bavaria has a conservative political reputation that does not always match the reality of Munich's gay scene, which is among the most active in Germany by any measure. The Oktoberfest context is also relevant: the beer tents have historically had an unofficial LGBTQ+ day, and the Gay Oktoberfest Wiesn has become an established annual event drawing visitors from across Europe. The Isar river running through the city, the English Garden - the largest urban park in the world - and the access to the Alps within an hour all give Munich a quality of life dimension that attracts LGBTQ+ residents and visitors who want urban amenity and outdoor culture simultaneously. "In summer by bike to Birkensee, skinny dipping, cruising, nature at its finest. Back for 1 Mass of Augustiner beer from the wooden barrel in Hirschgarten. Plus a pretzel, Obazda and watching the guys, amazing! Alternatively via Flaucher (night bathing island) to WAWI, the Waldwirtschaft. High above the Isar a natural paradise, with a diverse crowd, excellent food and jazz music in the beer garden. Back via Zauberwald along the Isar to Gärtnerplatz."

"Friday night bars: Sub, Nil, Prosecco Saturday: Bavarian breakfast at Viktualienmarkt, visit the city center, detour through Englischer Garten to see the surfers and the relaxed side of the park. Stop at the Chinese Tower for a snack and a beer. Afternoon at the gay beach at Flaucher. Dinner at Eiche. After drinks at bars Fesch, Nil, Ochsengarten or Rendez-Vous. Sunday: Pinakothek der Moderne museum (€1 entrance fee on Sunday), restaurant or beer garden depending on the weather for meals."

"My perfect gay weekend in Munich starts relaxed in Glockenbachviertel: during the day café, Isar walk and a bit of people-watching around Müllerstraße. In the evening, first to Café NiL or Prosecco to settle in, later on to The Cox or NY.9 if things need to get more lively. On Sunday then Deutsche Eiche – either to eat or simply because the place is part of Munich's LGBTQ+ history."
