Gay Guide Rome

Rome Gay Pride: May 28 - June 21, 2026
Written by
May 19 2026

I love gay Rome for reasons that have nothing to do with the gay scene specifically - the city is so relentlessly, overwhelmingly beautiful that everything else becomes backdrop. But the backdrop matters: there is something genuinely defiant about a gay community that has built itself in the shadow of the Vatican, in a country whose national broadcaster is uncomfortable with same-sex couples on television. Italy legalised civil unions in 2016 - not marriage, but a recognition - and Rome Pride, which routes past the Colosseum and through streets that have been Christian for seventeen centuries, makes that defiance visible once a year in a way that moves me every time. The main scene is in the Ostiense and Testaccio neighbourhoods, though the area around Pigneto has developed a queer alternative culture. In summer, the outdoor venues along the Tiber host events that combine the best of Rome's outdoor eating culture with a genuinely welcoming gay community. 🏳️‍🌈 Rome Pride in June - the Prides Roma - is one of the larger Pride events in Italy and a genuinely significant event in a city where the Vatican's proximity gives the occasion a political dimension that Pride events in Berlin or Amsterdam simply do not have. The gay scene extends beyond the Testaccio streets into Trastevere, Pigneto, and the Prati neighbourhood near the Vatican - which is a geographical fact that says something about Rome. Italy legalised same-sex civil unions in 2016 and the debate about full marriage equality continues. What I find most compelling about gay Rome is the experience of existing in a city this old: every bar is within walking distance of something built two thousand years ago, and the accumulation of that history gives the present a particular quality. For LGBTQ+ verified stays in Rome, misterb&b is the right place to start.

"FRIDAY: Parco degli Scipioni or Colle Oppio with an amazing view of the Colosseum from above. 9:00 PM (Dinner): walking towards Gay Street (Via di San Giovanni in Laterano). Outdoor table at Coming Out. Night: Around midnight Qube for Muccassassina. SATURDAY: A couple of hours at Adam Sauna (San Giovanni area). 8:30 PM back to Pigneto at Malo Glitter Bar. Saturday in Rome is itinerant. I follow Giam or Poppe or Latte fresco. Sunday afternoon: Gianicolo at sunset and Trastevere in the evening."

"Friday Start with aperitivo at Magnebevo, then dinner in one of the nearby restaurants. Later, head to Largo Venue for the Latte Fresco party and drag show — all within walking distance. Saturday Relax in the morning, then enjoy a traditional Roman pinsa near the pedestrian area. In the evening, go to Monk for the Poppe night or stay around Pigneto for bar hopping. If it's your vibe, Rome also has late-night cruising spots like Diavolo Dentro and Censured."

"Friday I'd suggest aperitivo in the Pigneto area for its very friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Then evening at Largo venue or Muccassassina, for those who prefer a nightclub with multiple floors and cruising area. Saturday evening I'd say GIAM, in summer in a nice outdoor setting. Sunday chill on the gay street or a quick visit to a sauna."

Rome Pride: defiant in the eternal city

Rome Pride (Roma Pride) takes place in June and routes through the historic city centre - past ancient monuments, past churches, through streets that have existed for two thousand years. The contrast between the parade's colourful energy and the monumental backdrop is something I have not seen replicated anywhere. Pride here carries political weight that goes beyond celebration: Italy's journey toward full marriage equality is ongoing, and the Rome parade has been, in recent years, one of Europe's largest. Bookings on misterb&b surge by +39% during Rome Pride. For dates and programme, see the Rome Gay Pride page.
