Phoenix Gay Neighborhood: Melrose District

Marc Dedonder
Written by Marc Dedonder

The first time I walked the Melrose District in Phoenix, what struck me was how unambiguously itself the neighborhood is. There is no confusion about what this stretch of 7th Avenue is: rainbow flags on the businesses, a bar culture that starts in the afternoon and runs until the early morning, vintage shops that have been here longer than most of the visitors, and a community that has been consciously building this neighborhood for over forty years. The Melrose District runs between Indian School Road and Camelback Road along 7th Avenue in Central Phoenix - half a mile that manages to pack in more LGBTQ+ identity per block than neighborhoods three times its size in larger cities. What makes it work is the combination of density and the absence of pretension. This is not a neighborhood that is performing queerness for tourists - it is a neighborhood that has been queer since the 1980s and has simply continued being itself. The History of Melrose District as Phoenix's Gay District

Phoenix's Melrose District developed as the city's gay neighborhood from the 1980s, taking advantage of the 1960s-1970s commercial strip's affordable real estate. Arizona has had a complex LGBTQ+ legal history - the state legalized same-sex marriage via federal court ruling in 2014. Phoenix Pride in April is one of the most festive in the Southwest, taking advantage of the spring weather before the summer heat makes outdoor events difficult.

Why misterb&b Covers Melrose District So Thoroughly

Phoenix is misterb&b's top Arizona market. misterb&b covers the Melrose District because the Phoenix LGBTQ+ community has built an outdoor, pool-focused culture unique in American gay life - shaped by the desert climate into a scene that is genuinely different from eastern or coastal gay districts.
