The thing about gay Amsterdam that stays with me is the lightness of it - a city where being gay is so thoroughly unremarkable that the scene has a relaxed confidence you don't find everywhere. The Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage (2001), and Amsterdam has been living that reality since long before the law caught up. The Reguliersdwarsstraat is the main gay street, a short stretch of bars and clubs that fills with a young, international crowd on weekends, while the area around Warmoesstraat near Central Station has the leather and fetish bars that have operated for decades. The Canal Pride in August - when the city's famous canal network fills with decorated boats in a floating parade - is one of the most genuinely joyful LGBTQ+ events I have attended anywhere. And the city's compact, walkable scale means that the gay scene is five minutes from the Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House, the best food markets in northern Europe. 🏳️🌈 The Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage, in 2001, and that legal history has shaped a gay community that operates with a confidence and openness that is still, two decades later, not quite replicated anywhere else. Amsterdam Pride in late July-early August - the famous canal parade, with decorated barges moving through the Prinsengracht - is the most distinctive Pride event in the world visually, and the surrounding days of events make the first week of August the peak of the gay calendar here. The city is also genuinely beautiful year-round: the autumn light on the canals, the spring tulip season, the winter Christmas markets. "Drinks at the terraces in the Reguliersdwarsstreet, followed by a dinner of your choice in one of the restaurants in the same street. After dinner, move to the Prik bar on the Spuistreet for more drinks, coffee and/or a dance. You can finish the night with fun at Eagle Bar or Dirty Dicks in the Warmoesstreet."

Amsterdam Pride takes a form unique in the world: the Canal Parade, held on the first Saturday of August, sees over 80 decorated boats navigate the city's historic canal network through crowds lining the bridges and quaysides. It is simultaneously a political demonstration and an extraordinary party - the sight of the canal boats moving through the 17th-century cityscape is genuinely breathtaking. The surrounding week (Amsterdam Pride Week) fills the city's venues with events, and hotels book out months in advance. For dates and programme, see the Amsterdam Gay Pride page.

"Friday drinks at prik. Saturday afternoon, go to nieuwe meer for some outdoor naughty fun, then go to taboo in the gay street for drinks, then go to a nice bar like nyxx or go to a themed night in church for fun. Sunday maybe go to twiske for more outdoor fun and and the day in the soho house with some drinks :)"

"Perfect weekend starts for me on Thursday, having drinks with friends at Prik Bar. Dinner in Chinatown. Saturday a gymsession and afterwards running erands at the local farmfrindly products on the Noordermarket. In the evening a movie and/or drinks in one of the gaystreets in Amsterdam, Regulierdwarsstraat, Warmoesstraat or Amstel. Sunday is lazy sunday."
