This is our third January in a row to hang out at Kehena Beach! We love this beautiful, relaxing, eclectic place. We had rain, we had sunshine, we had the black sand beach and wonderful meals in Pahoa and two great nights at Uncle Robert's community songfest and great food. The property borders the rain forest and is very much and tropical. Monday night BBQ, where locals bring in potluck, is just the best kind of gay energy you could ever want in such a tropical setting. Mat and staff are constantly making the setting more diverse and inviting. A new gym deck has just been built and there are a few pieces of equipment and weights. The black sand clothing optional beach is 10 minute walk. We meet really fun and interesting people staying here. This stay we got to visit Kilaeua's 40th eruption. Incredible! We are going back again in January 27. Go! It will be a wonderful, memorable experience. Thanks Mat and Jeff for providing this wonderful space!
I had a wonderful time at Kehena Beach. Its seclusion was paramount. I could hear myself think without distraction. And its proximity to the ocean was ideal. My room was beautifully appointed and Houston was and is a great host. He gave me lots of tips about the Big Island. I will go there again on my next trip to Hawaii.
This is a very interesting place. This is bit like camping in the woods. The hot tub is amazing. Can't but wonder, how this could be a real great place with some more TLC. Plenty of 30, 40, 50 & 60 something cubs and bears if you are into that, the hot tub is HOT and STEAMY
Great place to stay. Beautiful house set up as a guest house, well organized. JoEL did a perfect job hosting and recommending things to do. My room was quiet and comfy, the nicest in the house. Other guests were interesting, from all over. Walking to the beach was easy. This area of the island is remote and beautiful, yet Pahoa was not so far away that it was an issue driving there for dinners. The kitchen was well stocked and I recommend bringing food and preparing some meals there.
Great stay!! I felt very comfortable and relaxed. The hosts were very friendly and accommodating. The location within walking distance of the black sand beach was great. Highly recommend.
Gay garden paradise. Friendly staff, really beautiful jungle grounds, great room (Volcano) and shared kitchen. Kind of a gay community hub for the area, with a Monday potluck BBQ attended by locals. Nice yard for lounging. I walked to the Kehena black sand beach multiple times, and it's a good location from which to explore Pahoa / Kalapana / Puna. They're working on an old-skool wooden hot tub situation that looks promising. I'd go back for sure.
Wonderful experience here! Beautiful atmosphere and surroundings! Matthew was a gracious and friendly host. I will be back!
Loved this homey, welcoming guest house. Mathew and the team are very, very responsive and accommodating. This place is off the beaten path! Perfect for a quiet and personal get away! Wish I could have stayed longer and engaged with the community. Hope to get back and enjoy all that it has to offer.
Kehena Mauka Nui Club is a very laid back oasis near. Matthew is very easygoing and makes the stay very easy by including a list of local events. The staff were all very friendly. Shout out to Joèl(sp) who helped me out with info on the nearby volcanic thermal pools and helped with some first aid when I cut my toe on lava rock. The room was fantastic with private french doors opening onto the back jungle/garden. I recommend booking massage time with Houston if you can.
5-stars! Mathew does an amazing job of making Mauka Nui feel more like community and less like a bedroom. We loved being in a community of naturalists. The bedroom was very comfortable, the kitchen is well-stocked, and we made friends while we were here. Can't wait to come back here again to visit.
