By way of background, the residences were originally a 1940s constructed as a one-story building to house the Colonial Beach Volunteer Fire Department. In 1952, a second story was added to the firehouse, resulting in the building that exists today. A historic photo depicts the building as originally having two truck bays on the east-facing façade that provided access to the fire engines. The CBVFD occupied the building until a new fire station was constructed in 1961. The firestation did not contain a slide-down truck pole, as is often asked, because they were volunteers. They didn't live there; they lived at home. The horn would blow loud enough to hear around down and they would put down their dinner and rush to answer the call.
In the 1980s/90s, the building served as the Colonial Beach Police Station; by that time, the two truck bays had been infilled with red brick and converted to standard doorways. The jail cells built by Pauly Jail Company (still in existence) have been preserved since their forging in the mid to late 1800s. There is substantial, and interesting, graffiti inside hand carved by the persons spending the night. The cells were left unlocked and people were on the honor system, as we understand it. The police would give people a quarter to go buy a Dr. Pepper at the machine outside.
