I spent a full January week in Nice once, which is not the obvious timing, and I remember thinking that this city reveals itself better out of season. The Cote d'Azur has a long gay history - far older than most people realise - and Nice sits at the centre of it, with a community that predates the modern pride circuit by several decades. The beach in summer is genuinely beautiful and the promenade fills with every possible demographic in a way that feels easy rather than performed. The Carre d'Or neighbourhood and the old town both have a concentration of gay-owned and gay-friendly venues, most of which operate year-round. What stays with me about Nice is the light: late afternoon on the old town rooftops, with the sea visible at the end of every street. The Nice Pride event in summer brings the whole coast together. Italy is forty minutes east, Monaco is twenty minutes, and the accessibility of the Riviera from Nice makes it the natural base for the region.
